Cold air intake?

Post by 93legacySS »

Does a cold air intake work from the 02-07 wrx? I have a 93 legacy sedan automatic turbo USDM.

No, most WRX cold air intakes come with the pipe and filter. Out MAF does not fit their pipe. You need to get a cold air intake adaptor for your MAF. This is how mine is setup. A bit different from an NA, but yours will be simpler. Just go on eBay and look up cold air intake adaptor.

Its a bit expensive, but Apex'i part # 500-A022 will bolt directly to the MAF and is built much, much, better than the Spectre filters that absolutely everyone seems to run. And I'd like to think the venturi inside makes it flow better, but that could just be my attempt to justify spending so much on it myself :P

That's a HOT air intake! Don't do that. The factory intake is a cold air intake, right from the fender. Those cone filters let larger particles through and if not properly maintained, they perform worse and worse and if over-oiled the oil gets on the MAF filament damaging it. You won't notice any improvement other than noise which most mistake for more power.

Kimo hit it on the head. Believe it or not it is really only for looks and noise. Naybe 1 or 2 HP. It also will effect low end torque because of how much air it will try to pull in. The good thing about the Spectre's are they are fairly cheap. I just buy a new one when it gets really bad. I would like to go back to the stock setup down the road if possilbe.

Cold air intake?

I only did this cause my box was broken and shit. Haha I agree it's a hot air intake. I'll eventually do it right.. Haha. It sounds pretty cool.

I like not having the air box. Takes up a lot less space and much easier to disassemble the intake. Since I saw no noticeable loss in torque, I counted that as worthwhile.

A short ram is the same thing that people throw together with the "coffee cup" mod and a cone filter (like the pic in the 2nd post). Or you can spend like $170 on the Apexi Power Intake for the 93-96 WRX, which is high quality but for that much money you can do most of a TD04 and TMIC and get real gains.

So basically I could do one of those cone filters off ebay and attach to the airbox connection with a hose clamp

You need an adapter to bolt to your MAF and it has a lip that you clamp the filter onto.

Yes that allows the cone filter to bolt straight up to your mass airflow sensor.

And what pod filter should I get that will fit? Because I realize that it would be close to the abs module

No idea. I'm completely against the whole idea. I ran a cone filter for a while until I finally found a guy who had the rare airbox for my engine. But my intake is completely different than the stock ej22t.

If you can Find an SPT intake, they work well and are on the smaller side. I'm using an AutoZone filter. :)
