Bilstein vs KYB
Hey guys
Before you ask, yes, I have already read alot of posts on suspensions before deciding to post my q's. I know alot of people choose the KYB- AGXs or GR2s but I have heard no mention of the Bilstein shocks. Which is the better and why? Also what are the part numbers for a good set of bilstein shocks? Is there a prefered coil for either or a general multi purpose setup ( by that I dont mean for track use, just daily driver with umph for when i need it). preferably cheap spares coz this girl aint cheap...women!!. btw how often should the suspension(shocks & struts) be replaced?
Lastly, any one has a stash of cash that they arent using so I can finance my projects ?

Re: Bilstein vs KYB
KYB actually makes the housings for the Bilstein's that are used on Subarus.
I honestly don't think you'll readily find a set of Bilstein struts that are made for our Legacies. I think others have used Impreza/WRX stuff. The Bilsteins can be inverted and be a little beefier for rally/heavier duty use.
If it's a daily driver....I'd just stick with KYB.

Re: Bilstein vs KYB
Good to know. Problem is there is only one specialist shop here that has/ deals with the KYBs and you do pay for that exclusivity...Approximately 1000 USD!!! Is that normal pricing or can I try purchase separately and have them do the installation?

tirerack.com. Not being easy on my cars, a set of GR2s lasted me about 130k miles, but even when they went bad, they stiffened more, rather than floated. Front OEM struts were blown out when I bought the car with 107k.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

The stock setup uses struts and springs in the front and rear.

Try www.discountautoshocks.com I got 4 new KYB GR2s for $230 from them. Obviously you'll pay a lot more shipping but it might be worth a call.Elcapitan wrote:Really? Which part of the internet? Re: Bilstein vs KYB
Ok so slight problem. Whenever I select the model ie legacy, I get submodel options of L, L S, L Si and sport!! Mine is an RS. Which category does that fall under?
Lastly is there a Part number coz all what I found stated gr2/ excel G. Is that the same part? Really confused here

Re: Bilstein vs KYB
Springs are not included, just a replacement strut assembly. You'll need springs, rubber perches, top spring perch and top mount to make a loaded strut assy. There may be others but the only springs I know will fit are Legacy springs from Subaru. AFAIK all models use the same struts but different spring rates for wagon, sedan or turbo.
According to KYB, GR2 and Excel G are the same struts painted different colors. GR2's are silver and being phased out in favor of black Excel G's. To get part numbers I'd need to know more about your suby. Year, model, engine, etc. I'm sure that discountautoshocks can help with that. Good luck.

Thankx, you got me to finally add my car to my sig. I'm sure that'll make it easier to get help from you guys. What do you figure the approximate value of the complete setup would be. It might end up being close to the price I was quoted for here in which case it would be easier to buy local rather than try to import for myself ryt?SubaruFred wrote:Springs are not included, just a replacement strut assembly. Re: Bilstein vs KYB
Unless you have air suspension you should be able to use your old springs, etc. All you should need are new struts and mounts. That should cost under $400 plus shipping. If you need loaded strut assemblies, your best bet is to buy used struts and replace the struts and mounts (if necessary). FWIW, I just replaced my air suspension with new GR/2s and junkyard springs, etc. for under $500. I'm using the old mounts and new ones would have cost $150.
Re: Bilstein vs KYB
This is too funny. Its been so long since I was on here, that I came across this while doing some research on springs. Read the first post and thought "this sounds like the kind of funny guy that I could get along with"
7 replies down I read the name and realize that this was my question waay back then :-0 !!
funny right. Thank you to all who commented and pointed me in the right direction.
