Search Engine Changes

Post by Legacy777 »

As some of you may have noticed, the search engine hasn't quite worked as well since we made the change to the new phpBB software. From my observations, a lot of the key or important words were listed as "common" words and were omitted from the search results. The work around that I found was to use an * on either side of the common word. This is however not very desirable.

I have made changes to the board's search settings to disable the common word search feature. To make these changes effective the search index needs to be rebuilt. I have initiated that process, and it will take several hours to complete. During this time, the search results will be very limited. While the phpBB search index is rebuilding, please utilize the Google search feature.

I will post back in this thread once the search index has been fully rebuilt.

Thanks
Josh

Cool. Yeah, I can't even find my own threads most of the time and have to scroll through to find stuff, especially the damned 90mm Hella thread as headlight upgrades come up often. Doesn't help that I've been on here too long and remember so much, either.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I pretty much read every thread and will remember certain pieces from a thread and in the past I was able to find them with certain key words. Now, those things didn't show up.

Hopefully this will fix everything and make the search much more useful.

Rebuilding of the Search Index has been completed. From a quick test, everything appears to be working properly and is returning much more useful information.

Here's some statistics from before and after the search rebuild.

Before

Total number of indexed words: 169,114
Total number of word to post relations indexed: 6,027,846

After

Total number of indexed words: 168,896
Total number of word to post relations indexed: 11,377,838

As you can see the number of word to post relations nearly doubled. So search results should be much better. Only downside I can see is additional system resources utilized during searches, which may cause things to slow. So, if you have any issues with the board's search or the board itself, please let me know.

Thanks
Josh

I really miss the old search in page, it was so much easier.
also i wish when you click on post a reply and your not log in
i wish its send you on the post you was trying to reply,
it's always send back to index, this is hard sometime to go back on the topic you were in.

except from that this is well done i appreciate this web site and i visite it everyday

It might have been a temporary problem, I just tried it and it works.

Please try it again and let us know if it doesn't work and the terms you're searching for.
