Rob Tune Review

Post by Tommio RS »

Hi there everyone!

I have recently gotten myself a fresh Rob Tuned ECU and wish to share my opinion on this magic box!

Rob himself is a good guy. He always emailed my back and sent very detailed and well written emails.
And yes he is very busy. So JUST WAIT A BIT!!! He will contact you!!!

I was kind of uneasy about ECU swapping but from what Rob told me and what i have read i took the plunge!

For starters here is my setup with Rob's 550 tune:

Garrett GT2860RS turbo BB
550cc yellow top fuel injectors
AWIC
Coffee cup mod
98 outback ignition coil
TBE bell mouth DP
Factory heads
AT
Rev limit set to 6750
code 44 delete
Launch control 5K

other stuff might have been missed???? not sure

Im using the WG's spring pressure and NOT using my Perrin MBC because i have yet to install my walbro 255 fuel pump into the car. I see about 14 PSI when i could have 18 or so.

So i dont honk on it all the time yet. Just some hits here and there.

Thoughts towards the install.

The install on his ECU is self explanatory and doesn't need any explaining.
Just go find his HOW TO'S in the electrical section of the site.
I had the old ECU out and the new one wired in, in a hour running.
Very easy for me to install.

Gains after the install?

Gobs and GOBS of power!
Im not even kidding you!
The amount of power i went from is earth shattering!!!
I went from gas guzzler with no power to great mpg and fantastic power!
MPG i really have no idea but i can go another 2 or so days between fill ups.
Kinda sounds like a weight lose program or something! LOL
Kind of to good to be true BUT ITS NOT!!

In my years of being a Subaru technician if i were to give you a "Feel like" compare.
My car feels like a stage 2 09-13 WRX. And those cars feel perky! More so than the same year STi.

By NO MEANS do i actually KNOW how my 93SS stacks up against a 09-13WRX stage 2.
Im just going by my but dyno that i have gotten from driving many MANY moded subi's!

But yet again dont take my word for it. This is the internet after ALL!!

Anyways back to the review.

So i install this magic box into my car, put the plastics back on, hook up the battery and im ready for my 1st drive after install.

Turn the key
Fires up perfectly 1st crank
Sorta looks around for idle speed
Then stabilizes perfectly.

I let the car idle there till operation temp.

I basically just starting driving the car normally with out much boost involved.

After a while of driving around and checking the the systems with a ssm II all was looking OK.

So

I dropped the hammer for the 1st time! Not even pinned i may add.

My God!
I could not believe what my old tired car had become!
It hit boost like it NEVER before.
It actually sort of caught me off guard due to the nature of the beast being released!!
I soon found out very very quickly that i was doing nearly double the speed limit in that area....

After the little bit of excitement it sort of brought a tear to my eye!
I could not believe how much of a difference the ECU made!
I was after that feeling for literally 6 years!!!!
And now i finally have it!

So

In the end, the price does not matter in the equation.
The amount of potential you get buy simply replacing the ECU its amazing!
There is not a single CON i can think of.

Also i would like to thank Rob for making such a great effort in this matter.
There are plenty of guys on this forum looking for this.

And for me it has been well worth the wait.

Thank you Rob you have single handily changed my car life. I cant thank you enough!

And Legacy Central for being the best forums site i have EVER been part of.

Thanks!

There is one con, Tommio. At 17-18psi, a car with otherwise stock chassis is way over powered, lol. While its awesome on the highway my car can't put its power down in the corners to save its life! Never thought wheel spin would be one of my major issues with this car :)

Rob does great great work. He's done all the tuning on my rally car (RIP) and never had problems with it. He had to do some custom work to deal with my high-boost, low RPM setup with a turbo restrictor, but it made fantastic power and helped propel the car to many top 5 stage times nationally. Not too shabby for a 25 year old car!

The site only talks about the tune for the ej20. Not the ej22t

You're right. But... Rob designed and built an ignition converter to allow his ej20g tune on our ej22t engines. You should search for the "adapting an ej20g ecu" thread on the BBS for more information. And maybe contact Rob through his site.

Yeah the ignition converter does require wiring, but its only 8 wires. Alternately, i have my old school patch harness converter that requires no wiring, that i might be convinced to part with. It accomplishes the same thing as his version, but like i said, plug and play

I've already said how crappy at wiring I am. Once I get the fine details on the ECU tuned I might be interested in that

The basics are: install 20g in place of your 22t computer with a few wire moves. Put in his converter or run the two extra wires and go COP.

Well.

For what you pay and what you all get from the Rob Tune ecu and its bits you get one hell of a deal.

For example the cheapest tuner for a new subaru is the cobb access port and the $650. Then you need supporting mods also.

As far as wiring goes.

Its a cake walk if you use the stickies on the BBS.

If you can use your hands that helps too, or get some one else to help ya.

Im stilling running the setup in my 1st post but now with 4.11 gear and 5mt.

Dear lord the car still pulls HARD.

It will keep you pinned hard in to your seat well into 4th gear.

Also.....

It NEVER gets old, when i can out pull wrx's and sti's.

I just love the look on there faces.

Just love it.

Only real good recommendation i can give.

Make sure your car is tip top shape before this mod.

You will have a host of problems IF you dont!
