Replacement options for factory 5 speed on a 92 legacy turbo
My transmission is making some noise and its getting to be pretty loud. What are good replacement options since that is such a rare transmission. I could easily find a 4.11 from an outback or a 3.9 from a na legacy but to my understanding the turbo gears in my current gear box are taller and I don't know if I would like the shorter gears. Does anyone have experience with those options or have any ideas on a affordable solution?

The 02-05 wrx has tall gears as well, and thats what I'll try to find if and when mine goes out.

Replacement options for factory 5 speed on a 92 legacy turbo
Unless you get an STI transmission you will have to swap the rear diff also. People have been trying the newer legacy turbo trannys. The 06-07 WRX have a 3.70 rear making for some pretty awesome highway gears. Our swapped RS has it and the highway gas mileage rocks.

All this talk of wanting tall gears makes me sad. Shorter gears are amazingly fun in daily driving. Who cares if you sit 200 RPM lower on the highway, that's not what is going to make the MPG better.

I like my 3.90 I wouldn't want 4.11 or so for a daily

It's not just the final drive that makes it better or worse. It's the gearset AND the FD that make it good or bad.

Gps says im doing 78mph at 3k rpm, on the stock SS tranny with 205/55/16 tires. The 3.7 FD 06-07 wrx tranny has an effectively even taller 5th. Most of my miles are highway so ill take the tall gears

Subtract 18 MPH and that's what my speed is at 3k/5th gear in my wagon with the RA 4.44 trans lol.mike-tracy wrote:

Well there is a person I know that will sell 02 03 wrx transmission and rear end for 800 . Can I use my flywheel and clutch ? They are the same style on the ss as the wrx.

Not a spectacular deal but it works. Yeah you can reuse your stuff. Most likely you'll need to swap the flange from your legacy's rear diff onto the wrx one.

I ended up getting an 03 WRX tranny and diff from some kids who were parting out a wrx. I'll let you know how it goes when I swap it.
