ROB TUNE problems

Post by meatball671 »

Hello everyone, we recently obtained a rob tune ecu and a ignition converter second hand. We got it installed with the 550 injectors and the n/a maf. Once we went to go start the car, it would start but it's currently running on two cylinders. I'm expected the ignition converter to be faulty. I emailed rob to see if he can make a new one for us, but we'll see. I know other people have had this problem. Seeing if anyone can help us with this problem. the car is a 93 turbo wagon with a 5 speed swap, the car ran great on all four cylinders before the conversion. I was also wondering if anyone had an extra one, or if they wanted to sell one, thanks.

Well, installing the N/A MAF certainly isn't part of this recipe, you need a MAF from a turbocharged car.

Negetive, the 1992-98 NA maf is what the robtune calls for. It is the same as the MAF that came with ej20g engines.

Question for you Meatball, do you have an igniter that has been modified to go with your ignition converter? I don't know if it is or isn't necessary with Rob's device, but I had one with my home built ignition converter.

What else have you modified wiring wise in order to run the robtune?

We have the stock ignitor installed, we did the wiring in the write up, we merged the map group, and de pinned the two wires he said to in the write up

I bought one used and it was bad, too. So, yeah.

There's a post on here about how to make your own converter.

And it's listed in HERE SOMEWHERE..

the only time you dont need to have the ignitor at all is with the cop setup. if you are using a converter, the ignitor needs to be modified!

That's only if you're using the newer style COP with integrated igniter.

Have you followed the instructions in Rob's thread about the ignition converter?

https://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic ... 90#p350690

Beyond that, I'm not sure what other modifications are necessary.

Ok, I wish I was of more help, but I'm not very familiar with the RobTune setup.

Let us know how it goes after swapping the wires.

I got confirmation that the robtune ignition converter does not need a modified ignitor.

so I got the new box installed, and the car runs on all 4 cylinders now, but it's running super rich at idle. The afr sits around 10.9, vaccum is at -18. So I thought it maybe had gas in it still from running on 2 cylinders, I let the car idle for like 30 min to let it get to operating temp. Then I drove it around to see if it would clear up, but the car runs really rich at idle and low speeds, but once you get in the higher rpms it starts to clear up, and under small boost it seems pretty good with the afr around 14.

Another thing is too the rob tune we got has both the 440 and the 550 tune on it. I want to confirm that the 550 tune is when you have the jumper connecting the two prongs, or is it when you have it on one prong?

I don't have any experience with the new robtune boards, as I had the old school eeprom chip for mine. How old is your o2 sensor and coolant temp sensor? Your vacuum and afr readings sound in the ballpark of where you want to be.

On Rob's site in the comments, he says:

No jumper is 440cc, jumper in position 1 is 550cc.

YAY IT'S FIXED, so I decided to pull the injectors and the injector for cylinder 4 had a ripped o-ring. I changed all the o-rings and put them back in the car, and the car runs perfect now, it's amazing how much the rob tune changes these cars.😁😁😁
