4EAT problem in Legacy

Post by parapura »

I bought a used Legacy GLX 2.5 L, 2000 model AT. The car drives great. But when the car is cold and I take it for a drive, it jerks while shifting from second to third gear once and after that it runs fine till it is cold again. The car had done under 30K mile. I changed the AT oil and filter thinking that would fix the problem. But no luck. I took the car to dealer and there is no fault code from TCM. Can anyone help?

I spoke with my dad about this a couple weeks ago, as he has a 99 legacy with an automatic transmission. He said that he's spoken with several subaru mechanics, and they've told him that it's normal, just as the sound of hydraulic valve lash adjusters clicking when it's cold are normal

the 2-3 shift uses the brake band rather then solenoids. If it is adjusted to tightly, you can end up with an abrubt shift or it will not shift at all. When things heat up the band stretches and shifts become normal.

Thank you very much for the advice. I took the car to a mechanic.
Unfortunately the adjustment screw is not easily accessible. He told me
that the screw is just below the floor of the car and access is difficult and
the gear box needs to be removed. Is it correct?

I replied to you in your email.......you can get to that adjuster with the car on the lift......I would think a good trans shop would be more then capable of doing it. I know because I watched the guy adjust mine while on the lift.

1-2 harshness is from being too loose, not too tight.

2-4 then back to three is from too tight.

He didnt post what year, if its 2000 or later it doesnt have a brake band.

The easiest way I found to adjust it is to remove the 6 cross bar to chassis bolt and lower the rear of the transmission slightly. Then have one person hold the stud with a 7mm? socket and use an open ended wrench to turn the lock nut.

The model year of the car is 2000. If it is not having brake band, what it could be?
