Currently have 96 2.2 with poor bottom end and a 01 2.2 with poor heads.
Can I replace my 96 short block with the 01 short block?
Using the 96 heads, intake, exhaust and everything that goes with it.

The phase 2 short block will physically bolt to the phase 1 heads.
The question is head gaskets. I would personally put phase 1 head gaskets on that combo. But you'll want to ensure they don't block off any cooling ports.

Makes sense about gaskets.
I was concerned about piston and valve clearance.
Wonder if it would be an interference motor or not afterwards?

I'm sure it will be interference afterwards.
A friend made that combo and had very light valve to piston impact marks with the thinner phase 2 head gasket. He swapped out to a thicker phase 1 gasket and that engine has been going for years.
