Anything new for updating injectors?

Post by Turbone »

I've read most of the threads on updating to bigger injectors, but most of the threads etc were pretty old. Is there anything new out there for upgrades? I want to get around 400cc or better, but not over the top. I doing a mild build for my 89 RX, just refreshing the block with rings and bearings but have got a set of cams from Delta to drop in. Also going up to a VF39 and already have a Walbro 225 FP. Not looking for the most expensive, but not wanting to go real cheap either. Would love to go with Iridium fuel rails and then my options would be much easier, but price is a factor.

What are you planning to do for engine management?

I have found for my setup with the TD05-16G turbo, 550 injectors, and 220 Delta cam I could probably use a little more fuel. Maybe 600's would be the sweet spot and I could get a little more out of the turbo.

The 550 side feeds from the STi and other compatible injectors are a pretty easy swap/conversion for the 22t motors so I'd try and stick with something that is compatible if you have the engine management to use them.

I have a modified 95 JDM WRX ECU with ESL software for tuning. Are the side feeds a drop in or do I need the fuel rails also. What about a FPR?

Depending on what heads you are using Radium Engineering makes top feed injector conversions for the 20G and 20K intakes. The V3/4 conversion use different size injectors and mounting bracket than the V1/2, but you can use the v3/4 conversion on the V1/2 by rotating the bracket 180 degrees. The injectors I’m running are 1000cc fuel injector clinics, and in parallel fuel feed. They are size 14-48-14 (evo x size). The conversion might also work on the 22T intake, but I would have test it to confirm. I’ll post some pics later of the rail setup.

Assuming you're using an ej22t motor. You need to use the rails from a 92-94 non-turbo ej22. Those will allow the use of the STi and compatible side feed injectors. It's really probably the easiest and cheapest option to get larger injectors.

Thanks Josh! I spotted a couple of EJ22 in the local PnP just the other day, so I'll hit it up again tomorrow

What year range?

In the 93 MY there is a different part number used from Sept of 92 production dates forward. However, I think the manifold should be compatible/interchangeable for all 90-94 non-turbo engines. The turbo manifold is obviously different.

Those cars are long gone around here. Can I not use a '95-99 manifold so long as I also use the fuel rails with it?

Most likely no because the intake ports on the heads are going to be different. You have to match the intake manifold to the phase of heads.

Maybe someone else can confirm they work or not.

The 95 to 98 intakes bolt up but have incompatible electronics, and the 90-94 electronics don't work with em. 1999 is the first year of phase 2 ej22's, nothing from that works.

Can the 95-98 fuel rails bolt up to the 90-94 lines on a 90-94 manifold? Can STI sidefeed 550cc injectors fit in 95-98 Legacy rails? I don't think anyone has tried. Possibly.

The fuel rails use the same rubber hoses to jump from the engine to the body through at least '99 so fuel supply is a non-issue.

The injectors are all high impedance so even if the connector is different (is it?) that's a simple pigtail swap.

A 90-94 throttle body will bolt to a 95-99 intake.

All the accessory drive stuff is the same so no worries about the intake interfering there.

What am I missing?

The injector form factor our 1st gen cars use is kind of odd, it's a bastardized EV1 with the O-ring at the top of the fat part of the body. This is great for service life since the only part of the injector exposed to the elements is the electrical and fuel connectors but not great when it comes to interchanging with other applications or using common parts to keep aftermarket replacement costs low. In contrast, the 95-99 uses standard Bosch EV6 compatible injectors and you can run basically anything in their place as long as you have the right lb/hr and the right electrical connectors (with some potential for slight variations per OEM, most of which can be resolved by taking a file to the raised keys on the injector plug).

Idle air control comes to mind. The 90-98 injectors do indeed share the same plug, as does the STI sidefeeds (04-06?), so no issue there. What is known is the STI sidefeeds physically fit in *92-94 non turbo fuel injector rails. They do NOT fit in ej22t fuel rails.

That gets to the unknown part that I brought up

Slight correction, the 92-94 non-turbo fuel rails work with the STi side feed injectors. There were two different injector types for the 90-91 non-turbo Legacies and such two different fuel rails that weren't necessarily compatible with the 92-94 non-turbo rails.

Thanks for all the info guys. The PnP's in the PNW have lots of old Leggys in them, but I may have to travel a bit to find a MY92-94
A little off topic, but related to my engine build. I got rid of the hyd lifters and went solid. Grabbed a set from a 95 Imp, but screwed up and forgot to take the bolts also. Found out they were different lengths, so went back and grabbed them.

Grabbed the fuel rails off one yesterday. Now I'm on the hunt for some 550cc + side feeds

Long overdue update, I finally got the RX running a couple of weeks ago. With the 1st gen fuel rails installed, I picked up some 850cc side feed injectors. Right out of the box, one of them was bad (thats what I get for buying stuff from China) Even tho it was long past the return window, the seller was good enough to sell me just one inj. Problem is, I think that ones bad or a different one is, I need to test again. What I'm thinking now is maybe trying some top feeds with top rails. But I dont think my intake can handle top feed inj, correct? Or just get some OEM side feeds for now because, obviously buying chineseum aint working out

I think there may be a conversion kit out there, but couldn't tell how much or if it would work for the ej22t.

I know these are expensive but what about these?

Yeah, I've looked at them. Too pricey for my budget. Buddy of mine who works in a Subaru shop in PDX says these 850cc side feeds are notorious for failing. Saw deal for some JECS for only $180, I might pull the trigger. Today I put the stock fuel rails and injectors in and its running much better. Also, the VF39 I tried has a bad oil seal and smokes like crazy. I picked up a TD05 and now thats in, going to try and road test it tomorrow
