2.2L intake manifold doesn't fit! Funny thing is that the exhaust does though!
Gotta swap throttle bodies though! the 2.5L has a 3 wire idle control, legacy has a 4 wire.
Wiring from the engine has to be swapped to the 2.5L as well. Minimal work required from this - swap the plugs for the coil pack and the canister purge control solonoid.

Sweet! You guys look like you're working very efficiently.
The throttle thing is actually the TPS... 1st-gens have idle switches and later ones don't.
What's the gold-colored stuff there? Gear oil?

Ohh... that's little tiny pieces of engine in the lubricant... Eegh.
What are you gonna do about the EGR stuff? Just cap it all off?

That gold-colored stuff is my engine oil. Fun eh? Looks like gold-flake-metallic that i saw on a low-rider impala.

Mostly yeah, i've got a plate made for the big valve on the intake manifold. The other lines will be capped.

Everything looks to mate up fairly well. Only problem i'm having now is getting the tranny to mate up with the engine. it's got about another inch and a half to go. Anyone have any tricks to ge tthe input shaft splines to align with the clutch and pilot bearing?

Easy. Take a 22mm socket and turn the crank just a little bit. You should be able to slightly feel the clutch line up with the input shaft as you turn it.

update (scroll down pause for effect):
It's ALIVE! Muhahahaha!!
wow, never realized how much more fun 30 extra foot lbs of torque is. Engine only threw --1-- code after plugging in a 2.5L DOHC into the 2.2L SOHC ECU. I was thinking it was going to be the cam angle sensor, but turns out that's just fine. It's the Air Control Valve (error 24). Gotta switch the two outer wires on the plug and it'll be peachy. also have to investigate my oil leak (believed to be rear main seal, easy solve, but time consuming), and it's done.
Not for the weak-hearted though. I'd give this swap a 7 out of 10 in terms of difficulty. With all the parts available this is easily a weekend task, but without them, and without the knowhow and support of friends then this could have turned out really hairy (like my back!! EW!)
Jake, I'm calling you dad's shop as soon as i wake up to schedule an appointment, hopefully today so i can cruise to the rally undaunted by engine leaks and error codes.
All your base are belong to ME!

Awesome!
Are you trying to use the EJ25's IAC valve?

Yes. In conjunction with the ej22 engine harness. The wires going into the plug are black, white w/stripe, and yellow (i can't recall correctly ATM). The two outside wires need to be switched. The engine is running in limp mode at the moment.

Cool... I'm curious whether the EJ22 ECU can properly drive that type of IAC valve.

Jason - do you still have the pics for this around? I'm considering attempting the same thing...but having pics to look at prior would be a major confidence booster!

Shouldn't really matter regarding the trans type as long as you keep the TCU happy.
So that may depend on what ECU you plan to use.

If you're using the stock ECU, it'll be easier to not have a 90-91 5-speed, because the IAC valve will already be of the correct type.
