Difference between NA/Turbo rear swaybars

Okay, got the 93 Turbo rear swaybar from james_gt (thanks! :) )...

I was excited to upgrade to a slightly larger rear swaybar for a mere $35, but upon studying the two swaybars, I'm not sure it will fit.

First off, the way my factory swaybar attaches to the droplinks is completely different. I don't know how I'm going to attach it to the factory ones, and I don't know if I can get replacement ones to fit either. James left the old ones on the one he sent me, and I don't see those fitting the control arms either. Am I going to have to swap control arms to get this sucker to fit?

Another thing I noticed: There is some unidentified bump protruding down from the spare tire well underneath the car. I don't see its purpose at all, but I do know that my factory swaybar has a kink in it to compensate for it. The Turbo one does not.

Am I jumping for the stars here? Is this thing not going to fit? Or am I gonna have to get creative? I might try to get pics to show the differences...

I had a turbo bar on mine for a while. The difference is most likely between the 90-91 MY's where the drop links went into the lateral links vs the newer style where the drop links hook onto the lateral links via a bracket.

I assume you have a bar that is the newer style correct? Does the turbo bar you got have flattened ends? You should be able to get things to work.....may have to get different drop links......or modify how the drop link connects to the swaybar.

I was wondering about the endlinks aswell. It doesn't look like the newer style links will attach to our lateral arms. do you have to buy new lateral arms, or can newer endlinks attach to our stock ones?

Newer style links won't work (w/ the old stle arms). When i bought my bar it came w/ the old style, but i just purchased the new style links and they worked. So it seems you can use the whiteline bar on either style.

The swaybar I got is from a 93 turbo. This might be why they're different. The droplinks on my car go through the lateral links.

Yep, my stock one does not.

However, upon further inspection, it seems like the Turbo one isn't really any thicker. I did a very scientific experiment :lol: and tried to fit a 15mm wrench over the swaybar. It wouldn't quite do it, so I guess it's a 16mm. It was pretty much identical to both swaybars :?

There should be a difference. I think the stock size is 16.....the turbo bar is 18......you sure it's from a turbo legacy?

You can get new style links to attach to the older bar. You can also get the old style links on the new bar. Your just not trying hard enough.

I put an adjustable wrench over a turbo rear bar and an NA rear bar and they where different. Perhaps this is yet another place subaru cheaped out in later years?

That's what I was told it was from. If it's not, someone is in deep doo-doo! :evil: I presume that 16mm refers to the diameter of the bar, and not the circumference or anything. I will get accurate measurements soon.

Plus, I'm still wondering about this hump in the spare tire well. I don't think the new bar is going to clear it... :?

Okay, upon getting the 91 Turbo swaybar today, and comparing the 3 bars I have (the "turbo" bar james_gt sold me :roll:, my factory one, and the 91 Turbo one) the 92-94 bar will NOT fit 90-91 Legacies. There is a hump in the 90-91 spare tire well that the 92-94's don't have. There is a kink in the 90-91 bar to clear it, there isn't one in the 92-94 bar.

I will report back when I actually install the Turbo bar (forgot to get the bushings with the bar :( ). I am really excited to see how it feels! :mrgreen:

Okay NA guys, you have a mod to do! That is the best $20 I've ever spent! :D

The back end feels SO much more stable now, the entire car rolls less in turns, I can get on it in a corner far more confidently. The ride is firmer, but I actually like it because it also feels more solid.

I'm enjoying the car a whole lot more now, I'm giddy to take it to school tomorrow and dive into that favorite set of corners on the way! 8)

Update: I was driving in the rain today, and I sometimes play around a bit in the rain to marvel at the car's wet grip 8)

Unfortunately, the effect of neutralizing the car's handling that the Turbo bar did made it more prone to pushing in the wet. Ultimately, my corner speed suffered a bit, but that's no biggie. Just a small compromise I paid for the extra grip in the dry :)
