Yes, I will still have my legacy. I'm going to do my best to see what from the company fits and works well on the car. I'll let you know how it goes.

Alright, so i may be selling the legacy. living up here has me driving a whole helluvalot more then i used to... and the 2.5L swap doesn't get the best city traffic, the chassis is just old and antiquated. I've had my eye on a new Golf TDI; 35mpg city, 50 highway is a pretty tasty comparision to 17 city, 24 highway.

But seriously, if you're really thinking about getting a TDI, I think you should try to get a Mark III. That was before they porked up without increasing the engine's capabilities. My friend has a 98 Jetta TDI and it's a nice ride. Can't say I enjoy working on it as much as a Subaru though. And it's insane how computerized it is.

Don't wanna work on anything, really. Just wanna be able to get in it and drive. Now, that doesn't mean it wont get goodies per say, but just that I want something i'm not required to tinker with to keep it up to shape.

And I want something NEW; a mk3, that's not new. I make enough now that I should be able to enjoy something new and pretty, without dents, without scrapes, something that all fits into place. The japanese cars i've drivin all have a just *different* sound when the doors close - lighter. while that may be what makes my subaru what it is, i don't think that's what i want anymore. i'd consider the new legacy, but what i'd want with that car is more then i want to afford, and the milage is a big kicker.

There is a reason I bought that truck of mine. I too get in the moods where I don't want to deal with having to worry about my car, don't want to deal with the issues that arise.......now I don't have to.

I just leave it sit in the garage, and drive the nissan. The nissan is fare from being the best ride out there, but it's transportation that does get decent mileage and for the most part has been 100% reliable.

I agree. Keep the legacy, if you enjoy driving it at all. At least you'll have something to get around in while your VW is in the shop for 2 weeks.

Seriously, how much are you going to get for the leg?

But by all means, get the vw if you feel that you need it.

I sorta know how he feels about his car. It's somewhat the same feeling i have about the wagon, and why i sold it. I wanted a nice, newer car that i didn't have to worry too much about.

I guess i could have two cars, but i already have one vehicle that sits around unused for half the year (motorcycle), and the insurance and taxes aren't worth it.

Face it, you'll all eventually have to buy something else. Engines blow up, natural disasters, accidents, rust, etc...

NEVER!!!

Jason does have 250somethingK on his Legacy anyway, he's already put a new engine in it, so you can't blame him for giving up...

I want to keep mine as long as I can, but I do understand that it is a machine, doomed to failure since its creation.

Let's just hope I will like the Legacy that's out whenever mine kicks the bucket

Not particularly true on your first sentence. almost all japanese cars just sound light and don't have a comfortable door-closing sound to me.

I do indeed. New engine, new tranny, new suspenders, new wheels and tires, new headlamps, taillamps, new seats at one point, then back to the stockers, 2 alternators i've gone thru, and i'm on my 3rd radiator.

Hey, the 3 1990-1991 legacies I own are all like new cars to me! Even the beater auto wagon that we have is an awesome car. Of course it never breaks down and is just ugly from the outside (and a little, ok, alot on the inside since my wife and kids dont exactly have cleaning fetish).

Even though I have managed to destroy my engine once (ok, only a piston), now that I have rebuilt it for a second time in 5000 miles, have no ac, the interior is gutted and the exhuast is loud, I LOVE IT! Admittedly I would love it more if it was faster, but I do love it none the less.

Try closing the doot on an old Mercedes W126, they have a vault like door, that make a unique closing sound.

On another note, the VW tdi engines are very good, and seem to have a fairly long life, just the rest of the cars might not hold up as long.

The electrical systems in VWs have just about the cheapest wires and connectors I've seen. It may be the reason I don't think I;ve ever seen one newer than 6 months with all the lights working. I'd honestly trust my old Subaru for reliability over a new VW, but I imagine the diesels are better than the gas engines I'm familiar with.

Nothing beats the old Benzes for that vault-like door. Some of the thirties American cars are like that, too, but that might be getting a little old.

Yeah, it's crazy how thermally efficient those cars are... Apparently they don't warm up if you just let them idle; you have to drive them. And they had to stick a glow plug in a heater hose to help make sure it warms up on cold days.

damn car.......it just can't work properly.....Looks like the seal on the rear diff on the driver's side is leaking a little. There was oil oozed on the outside. I tightened the bolts. Hopefully that'll help it.

I swapped in the wrx shifter I got to see how the stock setup felt over the sti short throw. It's definitely smoother then the sti short throw. However it definitely has a more vague feel.

I did find out that 1/4" slop in the shifter is due to the adapter I put on to use the sti short throw. It's the stock pin that is allowing the movement. I may try to alter the adapter to use a nylon bushing. I'd have to drill out the stock setup however.....

I switched to the neo synthetic. Got the rear diff filled up, and went to do the tranny.....I hate gear oil with a fucking passion. The neo is definitely a lot slicker then the dino......and it slimed all over the garage......grrr.

PLUS....somehow I overfilled the tranny, even though I only put 3 qts in. So now I have to drain a little out. I gave up for tonight.

I drove it up the block. It felt slightly better. It did seem to shift into first easier and at a higher speed.

I'm going to get oil level right tomorrow......and also put the kartboy bushings on the stock wrx shifter to see how that feels. Then I'll put the sti short throw back in.

I saw no difference between the stock and sti shifter linkage. The only difference I could see was the shifter lever and the bushing.

Isn't gear oil the absolute nastiest smelling fluid that a car has?? And would you believe that when I screwed up my axle seal on my transmission, I had gear oil dripping onto my cat for almost 2 weeks???

Gear fluid is the worst. I hate antifreeze second as it's usually a bad thing when you smell it and it stank up my damn kitchen floor for days.

I snorted a bunch of hot gear oil when i did my trans fluid last time. If i smell the stuff now, i get nauseous.

A couple weeks ago i spilled a quart of gear oil in my trunk. I had to pay a guy to clean it, i couldnt even drive my car without being sick. Horrible, horrible stuff.
