Too much boost??

Post by WRXdan »

Hmmm...I don't have the IC on my legacy currently because I'm toying with water injection idea...but I also want a little more zip. Do you think running 10-12 PSI is bad news without IC. I'm running 93 octane. And need to wire a FCD.....

A last gen prelude ran me the other day. It had the typical rims/lowered, exhaust, and stuff. It was a dead heat till 70 - 80ish from 10mph. I just needed a little more HP.

melted pistons are bad

What modifications do you have?

Not much...4.44, trans cooler, oil/boost gauges, and K&N.

If I were you I wouldn't raise boost at all in that case... Modifications that justify mucking with boost levels include things like water injection, exhaust modifications, intercoolers, and turbo swaps... But if the engine's still all stock, it seems sensible to keep boost stock too. It's the number FHI's gazillions of dollars of engineering selected for the system.

Hey WRXdan, how does your car respond with the 4.44 gearing on the low end? How about on the highway? If you had to do it over again, would you go with the 4.44 gearing or do you think the 4.111 would be better?

4.44 all the way. It's a stump puller at low end, but the sweet spot is still around 3K rpms. Highway is fun. It spins around 3K at 60 MPH. I get around 19 mpg city. I drive it every day to work and see no real side effects. Well, that is when it's dry. We got 4 inchs of snow yesterday so I took the leg for a spin. You really need to use the manual button on the 4EAT so you can start in 2nd gear. I would say my WRX was better just because it was MT and it didn't have the goofy transfer clutches like the 4EAT. But I still made it along better than most on the roads.

Another problem when wet is torque steer. If it's wet out and you go hard out of a corner you will spin the front tires like nothing. I few time this happened an almost yanked the wheel out of my hands. Again, I think the transfer unit is not going 50/50 quick enough. If you floor it and force it into 50/50 then your fine.

Just as a benchmark. I ran a last gen prelude that had the typical mods from 10 - 70ish MPH. It was a dead heat. No one pulled. If we started off the line I think I would have pulled a car lenght. My leg is stock other then the 4.44.

But who knows what shape the prelude was in because I would think I would get pulled on the high end.

Its a stump puller at the low end? I would think that the 4.44 would be quicker than the 4.111, or is it geared in such a way that the 1rst gear is longer?

Dan, thanks for that info.

Ryan, I think Dan means that it has so much torque down low that it could pull a stump out of the ground.

Yeah, I guess "stump puller" is a old term:) 4.44 provide a good gearing advantage. Look at some drag cars...they have 4-5+ ratios.

ah, I figured you had torque, I just thought it related moving slow with lots of power. Similar to a low geared 4x4.

Hmmm, I was beginning to entertain thoughts of someday getting set up with 4.44 gearing for good low end torque. But if you're doing 3K at 60mph, that's what I'm doing in 3rd with the 3.90 ratio. And I drive the interstates frequently at 80 mph . . . I think that'll be too many revs on a frequent basis. I guess the 4.111 will be a good compromise for me . . .

hmm. I raced one of the new preludes a couple weeks ago. It was nowhere close. People give up right away when you put car lengths on them right off the start. Just no fun anymore.
