Okay, I can see why some people are fans of the older VW's...
At a car meet tonight, a fellow Subaru friend of mine (who's had nothing but trouble with his 96 OBS 2.2) bought a 87 GTI 16V "Motorsport" edition. According to the dealer, only 100 came to the US with that package. He got it for $100 with a bad fuel pump.
It's ugly, it's rusted to the point of compromised structural integrity, and the interior is missing two seats (pass, and half of back) but DAMN that thing is fun to drive! He could not care less about the car, so he told me to drive it hard. I ran that little thing to about 7500 through 4 gears, which only got me up to about 80, VERY short gearbox. It definitely moves, and the handling was superb! He spent more on rubber than he did on the car, but still, it would definitely hand my Legacy its ass on a autoX course.
So they are fun cars, it's just that I wouldn't go through the reliability nightmare of owning one...

And I now can see why you guys hate them. I've only done two vw's at work and I've been burned on both of them. One was a jetta with a canister filter. As soon as you get it off the oil just explodes, thank god I had glases on. So yeah I can see why you dont like them, but there are even worse cars to do work on than this. The first gen maxima comes to mind, MANY fords, and other domestics. I'm just going by doing an oil change, I mean, if you can't make the drain plug and filter easily accessable for an oil change what am I going to have to do when I need to change a cv boot or replace the serp belt or do the headgaskets. So far I'm totoally biased twords subaru!

I noticed something cool when I realized that I could change my oil by sitting in front of my car.

Absolutely. Takes like 15 minutes to change the oil. Super sweet.
Well, takes me 15 minutes to change the oil because I like to try and see how clean I can do it (without spilling anything or getting any on my hands). It's pretty hard to not get messy, but it wastes time trying.

Looks good. I guess there's no real worry about accidentally opening the valve or anything either...

Guess I'm too slow, mTk. :D
BAC5.2, if you see one of these in person you'll see it takes quite a bit of effort to get it past the lock so it'll open. It's enough effort that it won't accidentally open but not enough that it's annoying to open.
