Hehehe... Yeah, it's weird. They call it "OBD-I" as if it means something. It's really just a retroactive naming; when they created the OBD-II standard they retroactively labeled all the previous onboard diagnostics systems OBD-I. So OBD-I just means "computerized diagnostics but not OBD-II."

so theroiretically a OBD-II reader c an read any OBD-II equipped car?..

but a "OBD-I" car needs its own specific reader?

thx for all the input im actually quite interested in this stuff.

Yes, you have it right. OBD-II was developed as a standard, so all OBD-II-compliant cars are scannable with an OBD-II scan tool. Usually the manufacturer's own scan tool is a little more capable than a standard OBD-II scan tool though.

i will bye a new cable and try it agian, i am useing a ibm think pad and i downloaded the first file on your scan tool web page. should i be useing another one instead of that soft ware, i get past the first page where it says press a key then it dosnt do anything.

i have a another idea, if i get this running and take it to a guy i no that reprograms my chip would it make it more easy for him to tune my car and make more HP. he only uses a tool to stick in my exhuste and then goes from there.

If you get to the first page with the instructions you've got the right file.

I have no idea if it would help him tune your car. I have no idea how he tunes your car. I'm moderately well versed in our ECU's internals and I don't know how to tune fueling properly.

You trust this guy, right?

Are you positive you got the cable right?

I'm curious how Yoshio got the ECU not to run lean past 3 grand... from what I can tell the stock engine management system's limitations are in the MAF sensor and then injectors...

If the laptop is capable of printing to a printer with the current settings, it should be ready to run the scantool.

Damn, is there any way to get this to work through USB 2.0? I may be getting access to a laptop soon but I don' think it has a parrellel port though. :( It seems like a lot of the new laptops don't come with them. :?

There's no straightforward way to make it work with USB. It can surely be done but with a lot more hardware than the three wires we have now.

You're right that new laptops don't have a lot of the cool interfaces like parallel and RS-232 serial ports.

At least one company makes a PCMCIA parallel port adapter, but it costs a good 50 bucks. It would probably work though.

$50 bucks? Ouch. That's a bit pricey. I'll have to double check wheather or not it has the parrallel port. I sure hope it does.

Yeah, particularly not knowing for sure whether it would work.

Some newer laptops have printer ports on their docking stations or "I/O extenders" even if they're not on the back of the computer itself, so you might want to check that too.

any more development?

Post by scuzzy »

I noticed the last update to this software was May of 2004; is there any more development going on now or in the future?

I'd love to see some more stuff happen; monitor more than one parameter at once - as in select a few to monitor at once (even if only 4 can be seen with a reasonable refresh rate)

perhaps even writing to a text file so that the data can be imported into a graph later on.

I'm interested to know if any more is going to happen, or if the version that's available now is pretty much it?

Thanks.

Yes, more development will be forthcoming. I've spent the last year struggling to graduate.

Although I would need to do the same thing eventually (I mean to graduate) I think I would want to spend some time doing "more development". Would it be possible for you to release the source code of the tool you wrote? I promise to don't bother you with further questions if you would mind them.

I made one of these up today. I wanted to verify the working of the turbo ECU's I bought.

I did find out a couple things. The AT/MT identifier for the 92 ECU is read backwards in your scan tool Vikash. Like I mentioned when I did my swap. The wiring for the ECU, and how it reacted is backwards. I'm not sure if there are other wiring differences that are causing this, but it's just something I observed.

Also, I snagged a printer cable to mod.....While it was free from work, I'd recommend just getting the pieces from the electronic store.
