Thanks.

And about the second comment......

There is an as-of-yet undocumented problem when installing the EDM lights. The retaining clips for the cornerlights are not compatable.

Drunk/Stoned/Crazy/Disabled/Heat attack/Something driver. 16ish-23ish. Tapped the rear, backed off a tad, and then accelerated and sideswiped. Looked completely out of control, was weaving 4+ lanes. Would have been a hit and run, but he swiped another car 1000 feet up the road and crashed out 300 feet beyond that.

Everyone was ok. My two boys, 5 folks in an Echo, and two in the offending Impala. I purposely did not ask the officer what was the cause. If I heard the wrong thing I might have landed in jail myself. Officer said he did have insurance.

Drove it home, drives fine. I'm just so much better doing mechanical work than bodywork. Bummer. Knee jerk reaction?.......Swap it all into a '95-'99 GT wagon.

Glad it wasn't any worse than that and that everyone's ok. Hopefully the guy's insurance can take care of everything. I wouldn't say swap it all just yet!

Beating his ass would only cause other problems. Problems I didn't need to introduce my kids too. Problems I'm old enough to realize simply are not worth it. Maybe if it was still 1975............. :P

It's a DAILY DRIVER and I realize all the risks it's exposed to being a daily driver. IMO, if you've got so much invested (monitarily or emotionally) into a car that you would feel the need to do such a thing.....don't drive it everyday. Simple as that.

I't hard to explain, but the way that car was moving, it's very possible he had an honest failure of something mechanical and was just too paniced (and inexperienced) to make proper decsions. I will reserve judgement until I read the police report.

Filed a claim with my insurance, they will contact and deal with thier insurance. It will be a few weeks, I'm sure.

Here are a few "morning after" pics. If it wasn't for the rocker sills and the rear quarter panel it would be all bolt-on. Have I mentioned I hate bodywork? :x

Ditto!!! :x You are a better man than I would have been. But as you said, we'll wait for the police report to see what they have to say.

That's a bummer.

As funny as it sounds I've had nightmares like this about my legacy. I think about it often.

$5000 estimate. Obviously totalled at that price.

Now I've got to prepare myself for the haggling with the insurance over "market value". Got some time to check out ads because, apparently, it's gonna take up to 2 weeks for the CHP to finish the official report.

BUY IT BACK!!!!!!

by PhyrraM
Oh, I will be buying it back. Too many "extras" on it to let them haul it away.

Either that - or do a few marathon return-to-stock sessions over the holidays.

I'm just undecided as to what direction to persue. Lately (before the incident) I've been contemplating trading the WRX (stock) for a Baja because the last few Cub Scout outings have pretty much filled the SS to the brink. Now, depending on what the final $$ is, I might rethink that plan.

I could make do with a wagon instead of the Baja, but I really don't like the looks of the BF/BJ as a wagon. The ass end doesn't look right to me. The BG looks much better proportioned as a wagon. As a sedan I feel the exact opposite.....BC is much nicer looking than a BD.

Also, I hate to say it, lately the fact that we only have one car with an automatic in the family (Mazda Tribute) has limited us. My wife can't drive a stick and has no (serious) interest in learning. My original plan was to find a Automatic Baja (turbo) and keep the SSs as 5-speeds. But, again, now I'm not sure. I'd hate to find a really nice '96-'99 LGT wagon, swap all my shizz over to it and then be stuck with an auto in it. :smt017

Maybe, to keep cost down but still get quality, I'll just pay to have the rear quarter and rocker panel profesionally fixed and painted, then search for some Pure White junkyard doors and fender to bolt on myself. Finding another clean white SS front bumper skin is going to be hell though. Gotta find a few spare '99 RS 5 spokes also.

Clif's Notes....confused and frustrated.

One thing to think about on the Baja's is that there is no rear "middle" seat. They got rid of it so you can fold the middle part down to carry wood or whatever thru the cabin. Don't know if that matters to you or not.

So I go and pick up the 'cover sheet' to the police report because the full report won't be ready for 3-4 weeks. The cover sheet is basically just all the personal, insurance and contact info for the involved parties. No investigative info yet.

As expected, the kid is exactly 1 week away from turning 19. He was driving someone elses car, but there is insurance.

And to top it all off....after many delays, my built shortblock and reconditioned EJ20K heads are finally done. I almost feel cheated with that....wasn't I supposed to be excited when the motor was finally finshed?

in all honesty that body work doesn't look terrible.

from what i can tell you just need paint and maybe doors if those dents are bad.

i mean i'd def be pissed too, but you will get it repaired. :-D

Sounds like your best bet would be to total it and buy it back.

Have you considered looking at a Forester for a replacement?

Yeah, as stated earlier, I'll be buying it back or stripping it before turning it over.

n2x4 wrote:Have you considered looking at a Forester for a replacement?
Briefly. The Forseter has the same small rear seat as the Imprezas. It has a tall, but short, cargo area - also becasue it's based on the Impreza. Because my kids are getting bigger (fast!), and our seemingly endless Cub Scout events, I think the larger rear seat and cargo length advantages of a Legacy based vehicle are better at this time.

I'm still not sure this one is a gonner yet. If I can repair the rocker and 3/4 panels affordably, I can wait for a white car to turn up in the junkyard for the bolt-ons. Then I will return to the orginal plan of replacing the WRX with a Baja.

Buy an NA legacy and slowly (or quickly, as you can) swap parts over?

And I agree with the above. I probably would have been able to control myself with the tap on the rear. He pulled back and side swiped you trying to get away? I'd have beat him.
