Just to be clear -- speed density systems are the ones that fuel based on a MAP sensor. There is no airflow sensor. These include newer Subaru non-turbo cars.
My guess would agree with yours -- speed density systems probably wouldn't suffer from the same poor running that mass air systems do when eqipped with an open element filter. But there will still exist the usual tradeoff between bottom-end and top-end that you get from most intake and exhaust modifications.

would putting a honeycomb "airflow straightener" help alleviate the poor running conditions of a mas car? How about moving the mas closer to the throttle body? Or extending the 3 inch diameter tubing to go across the engine bay behind the radiator and sticking the cone on the other side?
I'm not gonna try any of this, but they may be alternatives for people who are fixated on cone-on-a-short-pipe setups.

Even though I already have the HKS filter in my posession, I'm not sure I want to put it on after I heard of some horror stories about pebbles busting through the foam and f***ing up some guys turbo and intercooler. I would think it is safe, but I can't put that scenerio aside. I'll have to think about it some more.

don't bother putting anything in the intake track.....you're just adding restriction.

You also have to think about what putting anything in the intake would do to pulse tuning. Probably more important on an N/a car, though.

Thats why some cars have such wild protusions and boxes on the intake, not only for sound
I think if you really want the best setup take your air box out and cut a hole in the inner fender to match the largest hole you could make on the dirty side of the air box. Then get some type of gasket between the airbox and this new larger dirty side hole. Thats my plan for my high HP engine.

Legacy777: I meant to increase the size of the hole that is already there. Your idea is pretty cool too but if you have ABS its not possible.

i wanted to go admin's route, but i understand that the airbox is part of the smog system, so you can't modify it and pass visual. I have the same thing only i built a box for the cone. Is the visual thing a california thing?

Thats also why I say enlarge the existing hole. They cant see that youve changed it!
