I hate WD drives. Had so much bad experiences with them in college on the computers I worked on.....will never buy one.....I think they may have gotten slightly better, but I still don't like them.

I recently did some research on drives and bought 2 maxtor 120 gb drives. They had good performance, quiet, and were reliable. Others were faster...but noiser......I've got a 13 gb maxtor in my server that just keeps goin....it's an old drive....but hasn't had any problems.

Yeah I like maxtor, good drives. I've heard of people having problems with WD but I've heard mixed reviews recently. For the price I thought it was a freaken good deal. (all that is reletive when you consider lost data or time it takes sending it in frequently, though).

I took a chance a couple years ago on a Seagate Barracude 40 GB drive, and I LOVE that thing. That drive rocks, on the reviews it had the highest average transfer rate of most of the drives at the time. I try not to look at peak speeds when you only get them at random intervals. Also, the thing was soooo quiet. Seriously, when I defrag, the only way I'd know it is seing the harddrive light on my case. The thing is just silent. Plus it is ATA/133, the WD drive I bought is only ATA/100, that in itself was a bit of a let down.

I'd heard that Seagates way back when weren't that good, but I don't have any complaints with them currently.

yeah seagates were crap earlier.....they were mainly used in server application....so they were probably better......but they're doin ok now in desktop applications.

freezer trick was a no go. Drive don't want to spin. I'm pretty sure the electronics are fried and/or something inside is fubard too....it rattles if I shake the drive with the flatest part paralled to the floor.....which isn't good. The new drive doesn't make the same noise.
