I see no reason for this thread to be locked. Nobody is bashing anybody here. If this was a video of a guy doing the same thing in a Legacy, im sure the statements would be the same.

Now, now, play nice.

That's a crazy vid. Street bikes scare me and I have a lot of experience on 2 wheels.

Oh, and for the record, I don't like lane splitting at all. It scares the hell out of me when I'm stopped in traffic or at a light and a bike goes flying by mere inches from my mirrors.

I don't know about you, but I'm not going to open my door to stop a legacy from balling though traffic...

I'm with Matt. I fear for the welfare of my car when bikers lane-split. And I also have lots of 2 wheel bike experience

Yeah, what if they take out your mirror or scratch down the side of the car while lane splitting? Its not like you can chase them and those little plates are nearly impossible to read that quickly. The shock of getting hit would be more than enough time for the guy to run anyway.

My grandpa told me a story were he was lane splitting when he was younger. He was going a good speed and traffic was stopped and there were two cars really close. He took both their mirrors off.

Well fine, don't lock it then. I didn't want to say this, but this is what real life is like. A young exciteable driver in a mitsubishi mirage took notice me and my bike. Thought he was racing me from light to light.... I did not. Then he started swerving at me. He slowed down and got behind me, then sped up and whipped around me at a very close distance.

We then were stopped by another light. I finally yell at him "hey, leave me alone". The guy then freaks out. He throughs it into reverse, backs up, and revs his engine like he's going to run me over. I jump off my bike when he does this and I run out of the path forward path of his car.

He gets out of his car at this time, and makes gestures as if he's going to hit me and yells at me. Bystanders get out of there car and surround the car telling him calm down. He doesn't. He kicks me three times, with yelling and screaming between each kick. After the third kick. I have to defend myself because I'm getting hurt. I headbutt the guy with my helmet on--knocking out his two front teeth. I then punch him a few times in the head with my carbonkevlar gloves on. Bystanders then jump on the both of us. I get no charges because of the extreme amount of witnesses.

Moral? I'm touchy about this stuff. You are not judges. I'm sure that guy thought I did something worthy of teaching me a lesson about.

I now ride armed. If you open a door on me, pray I don't get up.

FG is right.

Even before I started riding I knew that the overwealming majority of motorcycle riders where far better drivers in either vehicle type than the person who only drives 4 wheel vehicles.

Most often the car drivers are jealous deep down that the guy on the bike can go to the front of the line at a stop, out brake/accelerate them without trying to show off and split lanes when traffic is backed up.

Thats valid. You werent screamin through traffic like an idiot.. he was the idiot and he deserved what he got.

Again, I dont care who you are, what your wearing or how many guns you have on you. If you see a black Legacy Turbo Sedan, dont pass me 3" from my door at 75+mph... you wont like me much after you do.

Bikers are cool. I got no beef against you guys. Hell, I idolize you. I only wish I could go from 0-100 before i could blink, but its the stupid bikers that give you guys a bad name... and its the stupid bikers I am reffering to when i say "i'd risk the drivers side door of my legacy knowing you'll think twice before lanesplitting like a dumbass"

whoa buddy! I sympathize with you, don't get me wrong. I don't think that you you were in the wrong in that situation, although shoot, you could have turned off and avoided it, but that isn't always an option.

No one here is accusing you of anything. We are just mentioning our distane of jerk riders. There's also jerk drivers, does that mean that just because someone drives a car that is riced out that he is automatically hated by us,..yes...j/k. THe answer is no. Don't get so hyped up about this. If you don't fit in the category don't worry about it. I hate the guys that drive around flashing their highbeams at everyone to get out of hte way just as much as the bikers that go 45 lanesplitting while traffic is standing still.

It's a good thing that guy didn't run you over. We're all glad you didn't get pegged for it either, especially since you didn't do anything to deserve it. There is no need to get overly sensetive on the issue.

Maybe I should post this another way since nobody seemed to read it.

When Im on a bike there are say 20% of jerk car drivers
When Im in a car there are say 2% of jerk motorcycle riders

Thats not counting the people that make mistakes and unintentionally put you in danger.
In a car you can make mistakes all the time, even hitting fixed objects with little consequence. On a bike even the smallest mistake can really mess you up.
I know, I hurt myself bad falling right after taking off from a stop sign and I must have been going 5mph. My hand slipped from the clutch.

In california 99.9% of all drivers are idiots... no matter what they're behind the wheel of (or handlebars).

Honestly, i see equal amounts of idiocy comming from both drivers and motorcycles. Might seem like more drivers are careless because we probably outnumber motorcycles at least 5 to 1.

That sucks ciper. Your are very right.

I almost had a pretty bad accident coming out of a gas station. The bike had a part of hte handle bar that came out so that you could rest your palm on. IT wasn't a true cylinder of a grip like most grips. If you can imagine it was a cylindrical grip with a slab coming off of it to rest your palm on it. I was coming out of the gas station and made a right hand turn and stopped at the light with my left blinker on. It turned green and I quickly entered the intersection. It was a three lane road I was turning onto and the car across the intersection decided to pull into the far lane. That's safe. In my turn I felt my bike suddenly not want to lean anymore and I realized my kickstand was down. I quickly hit the brakes and decreased my turn but my weight shifted forward and my hand pushed on that slab on the grip so the bike took off. I quickly pulled the clutch and stopped the bike litterally inches from the car that was coming into the far lane.

I will never have a grip like that again.

I couldn't agree with you more ciper, the problem is that one percent is very visible on the bikes they drive.

I'm gonna kick dogs when poop in my yard, slap babies when they cry on the plane, and break old people's hips when they open their car door into mine.

Old people, think twice when you're parked next to a white turbo legacy.

To comment on subarujunkie's post, I think california drivers, although more aggressive than a lot of other states, and you have a lot of people who are stupid (you just can't avoid it), on a whole they are MUCH more aware and situationally alert than other states. It just comes with the way our traffic is and how many cars we have on the road. Oregan and Washington on a vast whole has drivers that seriously have no idea what is going on around them. If anything split second were to happen they'd have a pile up on the freeway. There are exceptions to this very very stereotyped generalization, but for the most part that is the experience i've had.

Californian's can't drive in the snow generally speaking. Even the rain they have a hard time sometimes. I dont know how man people I've seen slide through intersections on the first rain of the year. :)

A person who hasnt ridden a bike wont understand because the good bike riders are invisible to them, no joke.

Alot of accidents happen between good drivers and people riding a bike just because the driver in the car didnt see him.

Now imagine all the times a bike has been around you and you didnt take notice. Your only reference point comes from that one guy who was being a dork on his new sport bike.

Californians dont know how to react when it start raining. I never understand why a small amount of water somehow decreases the average speed by 25 MPH

yeah i try and watch for bikes and give them room when they lane split. At least it won't be me they are hitting.

What I dont get are those guys on BMW with the huge cases stuck to either side on the back. It makes the bike wider than a goldwing. What the hell are you carring that you need so much space!

Posted: Thu Apr 01, 2004 5:08 am

That's BMW's bad. Those things are wider than your handlebars. I don't see goldwings lane split that often. Maybe twice in my life. Those BMW's though, that's another story.
