When I was 18 my 5 spd tercel could "power shift" thru every gear, including getting from neutral to 1st.
I thought it was the coolest thing. I even learned how to down shift with it.
It only occured to my a few years later when I lost my transmission that it was doing more bad than anything "Cool"
So now I've got everyone and thei mother trying to race me!!

That reminds me of a time when my friend was test driving a Matrix. He didn't really know how to drive a manual too well and the dealer gave us the car . . . with 5 MILES on it!! I drove it up to Baltimore (about 45 minutes away) running through the gears like I stole the thing (still didn't powershift, tho). The car came back with almost 90 HARD miles on it.
Don't even get me started on rental cars. I had a rental saturn that I took to an autocross. I did ebrake slides and such in it . . . rolled the tires so bad that the plastic wheel cover MELTED into the steelie! LOL!
My friend has a video of that autox

Flat shifting would be pedal to the metal jab the clutch and fling it into gear. It'll always be the fastest way to shift a manual transmission, but FAR from the friendliest way to do it. I couldn't EVER bring myself to do that to my (or any) car.
I always thought power-shifting was just ham-fisted shifting (yanking it into gear rather than letting the syncros do their jobs).

Your description of flat shifting is pretty close to how I have to drive my celica to make it stay in lift. We always used power shifting to describe not using the clutch, but matching the revs and just changing gears (like a dog box, but with a regular trans).

Jason - You do let off the throttle though when you shift, right? ... Right?

Which Celicas are you talking about? I tried to powershift my Celica once which led to the worst sound I've ever heard come from a car in my life. If you think your GT-S makes everyone want to race you, try driving a red 92 Celica with a black hood + hood scoop from an All-Trac. I get late 80's Cavaliers trying their luck. Luckily, I never had to go past 5 psi to prove my point in that car. Man, now you've got me missing that thing.

91 Celica All-Trac @ 0 psi (turbo being installed)
92 Celica Turbo FWD (swap) @ 12 psi HOLY CRAP!!! I miss AWD

Yes, I let off the throttle. But I go through the clutch motion and go back on the gas pretty fast. Did that in the legacy when I had it.
And I'm driving a new celica now. I think that's what they're talkin about.
