Too bad we couldn't rework DOHC heads to run rotary valves actuated by stepper motors. Just have to figure out a way to run the water pump. If I had the money ... That and a diesel.

I'm curious as to why this happens. An educated (LOL!) guess of mine would be that at the speed of sound there is a sound-pressure wave produced that tends to disrupt the flow of air.
