I'm going to pick some underappreciated underdogs for my fave non-Subaru cars:
E30 318is. It's not that powerful, but it handles awesome, looks great, and is still as much fun as the best of any BMW's:
The only Volkswagen I can say that I like, the Corrado. It's the best-looking VW IMO, and it is one of the finest handling FWD cars ever.
Ever since I came real close to getting one, I have always wanted a 91 Sentra SE-R. They are one of the first (and one of the best IMO) Japanese hot compacts to ever come to the US.
Do all the Honda bashing you want, everyone knows this is still an awesome car. The S2000:
Oh yeah, even though I've only driven one in Gran Turismo, I really really like the Mazda 323F or Lantis:
I don't care if it's not considered a true Porsche, I want one. Bad. 944 Turbo:
Others:
Mitsubishi Starion/Chrysler Conquest
Infiniti G20
Suzuki Swift 1.3 GTi
Mazda 626/MX6 Turbo

a few more of my favorites
KP61 starlet, ~1700 lbs stock and rwd
If you dont like 323 gtx's you probably smoke crack.
straight axle toyotas, ever since my friend took me wheeling in his 83 shortbed I've kinda had a thing for em
VW type 3's, love all of em, notchbacks the best of course

I forgot a few:
First off picture of turbo buick
GMC Syclone /Typhoon. Syclone was fastest truck in the world for a long time(I think the SRT10 is faster now)
Anyone else think 4 door Skylines are hot?

Thats it for now, I'll probably think of a lot more later

Now this is a fun car. My dad's had the 1275cc engine with supercharger. He had two, actually, one in the late 60's and another he sold last year.
My mom simply refused to ride in this car...that's how you know its your most-fun car.

oh ya, almost forgot.
97 993 Turbo S
worth as much now, as they were new.

those grand nationals are sooo sweet. in fact there is one for sale down the street from me, but has been for several months.
Sy/Ty are sweet too, as far as them not being the fastest truck anymore, they still have the most potential and cool factor. I'd take a syclone plus mod $ over a srt-10 any day.

those things are super cool.
No, that's a great idea though. It'd be fun to build my own.
If it's between any preassembled sans engine/trans I would pick this

OMG, that's a sweet notchback! I wanted a notchback soooooo bad back in HS. All my friends had bugs, buses, squarebacks, fastbacks and Gia's. Not one notchback. That was my dream car, still is in many ways. I've only ever seen two in real life though. I think they got a lot more of them up in Canada then we got in the states.

The reason for the rarity of Notchbacks in the US, Matt, is because they were never officially imported here
I've seen one Notchback here locally, restored beautifully, and I believe that car came from Germany.

Here's a few of my top choices:
Porsche 959:
Porsche Carrera GT:
Caterham Super 7:
Mini Cooper S:
Nissan Skyline GT-R:
Those are just the first ones that came to mind.

Ah yes, the Carrera GT. I wouldnt even consider that in the same class as anything else on this page...

I'd prefer the 959 myself.
197 MPH top speed with active suspension that lowers the car at 100 MPH for better aerodynamics. 6-speed manual gearbox w/ AWD. Twin-turbocharged flat 6-cylinder 3200 lbs w/ 450 BHP. Double wishbone suspension w/ 2 shocks per wheel.
I just realized the other day that I'm a Porsche geek. I have several books on the company, and am constantly looking for more info.
