Lugging is harder on the bearings than not lugging... The difference may not be significant for a long time on our engines, but there is a difference. I see your point, though -- for many people the difference may not matter since they don't plan to keep the car long enough for it to matter.

66 miles to work?
I thought living 10 miles from work three years ago was leaving myself vulnerable and overly dependant on fossil fuels. Rather than have my livelihood at the mercy of supply/demand of gas, I moved. I spent 7bucks in all of August on gas, and most of it is still in the wagon.
Not everybody can move, but choosing where we live and how we get to work often takes too much for granted - like cheap gas - and leaves us at risk if we let it.
You should seat a few people easily in your Legacy. Are there carpool info sites or networks in your area?

I'm about to burn my F'n TW to the ground. I got an AMAZING 200 miles to the 16 gallon tank. Yes people, that's 12.5 miles per gallon. I hate this car more and more.

How do the Audis have AWD and turbo and still get 30+mpg?

Im getting the first mk2 jetta turbo diesel I find, and swapping it into a german rabbit. with propane, a turned up pump, straight pipe and 20psi or so would be a damn fun car. oh and the 40mpg while driving like an idiot wouldnt hurt either. 60 mpg driving like a grandma.
also want to try a grease setup.
too bad 1.6TD's are super rare.

The same way I think Toyotas are getting such good mileage: I think they're running lean.

As most may know, Toyotas have had a problem with sludge, and it's not just the old 3.0 V6. I saw an 05 Corolla the other day which had sludged up completely, not quite to the point of seizure but close. Needless to say, the genius that bought it hadn't changed the oil since he bought it (it had 18k miles on it and we told him to fuck himself when he wanted a new engine under warranty), but I'm sure we could get away with running our engines for 20k without changing the oil and we'd still have halfway-decent running engines. I think the reason is that Toyota engines run too hot, and running them lean will of course cause them to run hotter, and by running hotter, you break dino oil down into sludge faster.

I don't know if Audi is doing the same thing, but if they are, they probably get away with no sludge by using synthetic.

I'm going to be moving down to Houston in a month or two, and giving up my ~15 mile daily commute in exchange for about ~70 mile commute. One day a week I'll be doing a 180 mile commute. So that's over 450 miles of commuting a week.

I'm going to pull off my roof-rack and rear seat, probably the trailer hitch too, and empty the car of everything unnecessary. I get around 22 mpg in town with all this stuff on it.

Another option I've considered is turning my GS500 bike into a commuter (add a windscreen, change the gearing). Right now I get about 45 mpg in town. I'd also be able to use the HOV lane without penalty. But I think maybe the cost of tires would outweigh any gas savings.

How do you possibly get 22 mpg around town in an NA wagon? I had a 91 NA wagon w/ an automatic transmission, that I drove like a prick and consistently got 26mpg. I can personally attest to the fact that I never once replaced the sparkplugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter or anything for at least 45 thousand miles either.

No idea. I'm surprised you got 26 mpg in town, is that normal? Mine's actually a 4 dr FWD sedan with a 5 speed, so it should be a little lighter I think. I don't take it to redline all the time like I used to, either.

I've never replaced the spark plug wires, but everything else is done at the recommended intervals.

I only get 27 mpg out of my Speed Four (600cc engine). I guess I spend too much time in the fun part of the powerband

I didn't get much better with my FWD auto.....

I pulled into the station today; 116 Miles; 5.6 Gallons. I calculate like 21 MPG. That comes from me racing it one day out of the 6 I drove.
