You could import one of those sick cars they are always beating the crap out of on top gear. Like that Civic SI type R powered exo-skeleton that pulled so many G's that it looked like the gravitron on crystal meth.

I agree that VW has problems, lots of them.
My roomate is an absolute VW nut and he will swear up and down that VW is a superior automobile. He used to brag that they were trouble free, but that kinda stopped after several problems with his and his girlfriends jetta's both early 90's. He knows his stuff about VW too, he's had and wqorked on probably 10 of them. So when he comments on their reliability not being the best, thats pretty much truth.

I also had a discussion with the said owner of the 1.8t about our two cars. He keeps on calling the legacy Jap crap. First bad move. I then proceeded to tell him that the only time that he has me is when its dry. And that he doesn't have me by all that much considering his higher torque and hp and that his car has 11 years on mine, including 11 years of technology, mileage, wear on engine, and that so called VW enginering. It was kinda one sided, he was quiet after that. Sorry to go off topic, just thought i'd pass along a VW story.

yes a 330i BMW would be a nice choice

a 330ix would be a really cool choice also, although in my opinion AWD is really not needed if you have a second set of wheels with real snows. My E30 325is goes like stink in the snow with narrow 14" michelin snows. 50/50 weight distribution do have its advatages

a little cheaper would be any E36 3-series, which in many BMW aficiando's opinions, are the best 3's of the last 20 years. bad water pumps and a few other quirks but once those are taken care of (and they should be at the first timing belt change), pretty trouble-free

the '95 M3 I have lined up is mint and its going to cost me 10k (64k miles, never salt or snow, all dealer maintanance since day 1, farking mint).

I find BMW's easy to work on, I've had one per decade and drive the stink out of them, never had a total major component failure, worst was syncros and rockjer shafts but in a '71 2002 can't complain too much. My 325is has had no real problems at all in 100,000 miles of my driving, except for body damage at the hands of fools.

and maintenance parts are NOT expensive, in fact cheaper than jap cars

I owned a 95 GTI VR6 for a couple of years. I LOVED the handling after i fixed the spongy suspension(Just in america BTW) with eibach/bilstein rally setup.
But i couldn't keep up with the maintenance cost, in 2 years:

faulty Coil pack, 300$,
faulty thermostat, 160$,
busted glass headlight and fog light, 400$,
brakes once a year, 650$,
faulty idle control valve, 200$,
A/C compressor clutch seized, 200$ (to remove A/C completely),

Alternator strap bearing seized, 350$(I was 10h drive from home, 8h00 christmas morning, at -28C, nice...)

And then paint and corrosion, i say don't go there, period.

A good buddy of mine put in a custom turbo setup in his 95 jetta a year ago. T04b, custom FMIC, walboro fuel pump, tial 50mm bov, 3in strightpipe stainless exhaust. Did it all himself. 3k RPMs and all hell breaks loose. Can punch it in fourth at freeway speeds and break em loose. All of his friends give him major props. But we never fail to remind him that the power windows don't work, and the rear passenger one often falls down into the door. Paint is horrible, too. My Foxbox is not a good example of a good VW either. But its a beater so its ok.

My Mom has a Passat 1.8t...its a nice car...handles well, gets 33mpg, etc...but feels really isolated...

If i was to buy a new VW It would be a TDi, they are so much fun to drive!!!

I will agree, that as a Diehard Air-Cooled guy, the latest stuff is not impressing me!!

VW has far worse reliability than even the domestic makes (source: Consumer reports).


Personal experience: My coworker took his brand new Jetta to the stealership dozens of times in the first few months to try to fix some running problems/smoke. They kept doing major teardowns and couldn't figure out the problem. Turned out VW screwed up the piston ring design on a whole bunch of Jettas. They ended up replacing the whole engine in this brand new car under warranty... just as they did on many other Jettas

I didn't read through everything, so this may have been said, but that impreza was nice when we had it

My main complaint against VWs is reliability. The passat is supposed to be ok though. Avoid the cabrio, golf, and Jetta VR6 if you want a reliable car. Jetta 2.0 is supposed to be fairly reliable.

If I get a newer Subaru, it will end up with some form of swap, and 300+whp.

I can't let that happen. I need something I will leave stock.

I'm to young to be concerned with running 12's, 11's, and 10's.
