The autoshifter mechanism... the whole thing.
The gear shifter on the floor can be in any gear, but if a cable doesn't move right, the indicator on the dash wont match up and the gun can do funky things. WTF is up with that?
Sunvisors are chinsy as something you would buy at K-Mart.
I don't like the way the windows roll down in the back.
Seems that a lot of the interior parts are chinsy too.
The engine seems to be pretty danged solid. It's small, compact, but it puts out good solid power with one of the best reliability track records out there. I understand that the FAA has approved Sube engines for small aircraft. That says a lot. It's just all the other systems that come up short.

Subaru engines are not certified aircraft engines, therefore the FAA hasn't certified them for use in certified aircraft. I say certified alot because in the aviation world every part on a certified aircraft has to be an approved part, and thats strictly enforced. Only homebuilts can sneak around FAA regulations, and thats where people put in subaru, volkswagon etc engines because their damn good and reliable. But you won't see an EJ22 in a Cessna or Piper unless its going under FAA STC certification which won't likely happen.

This is easy - just buy one of those blades with a plastic 'spoiler' on it. I've had to do this on virtually all of my more performance-orientated cars. The little spoiler presses the blade onto the screen harder as the speed rises. I've driven at 100 in the rain (on an empty freeway - I'm not insane...) and been able to see fine. Unlike my poor passenger!

I've thought about getting those in the summer but in the winter I have to run winter blades and I haven't seen them with the spoilers.

Then I get lazy and run the winter wipers all summer which probably only adds to the problem.
And Yes the cup holders suck, and I want the adjustable variable speed wipers badly.

when you say adjustable variable speed wipers what do you mean? Don't they all come with intermitten(with like 4 choices), low, and high? Do you really need more than that?

There are plenty of times when the intermittent setting is just a little too slow or just a little too fast

Yes...Yes I do. My old Ford Explorer (piece of crap) had high, low, then intermitting with like 12 different speeds. I liked it

You could set it to wipe almost perfect in any condition. I find myself doing it manually by pulling back on the wiper control in our cars. My turbos intermitting only has 1 speed..... so low, high and intermitting 1 speed.

My 91 LS had a wide range for intermittent. I was really surprised when I got the turbo that it only had 1 choice. I use the wipers alot like Matt does, just pulling back on the handle.

This thread is turning into a bitch fest about all the little intricacies and desires we as owners want added or feel should have been added.......
I would say this is more of an "omission" thread rather then "flaw" thread

Yeah, Josh, you're right... It's kind of a fine line between flaw and omission, though...
But, hey, you're most critical of the ones you love, right?

flaws

Someting else that I see as a flaw is the structure of the wheel wells. Between the rear wheel well and the rear door on my inferior '93 NA legacy there's this little body piece thats actually glued on to the car. It's a thin plastic strip going up into and including part of the black moulding strip and it looks just weak to me. Plus, rust tends to start under it. I like the body for the most part but the wheel wells could stand a light flare to them. As it is, they just kind of go straight down. I actually kind of like the outback body style except that it's a short car. Some elements from those would look good on my legacy. Anyway it's just my opinion. Thanks for responding to the thread though. I've liked reading the responses and the reparte.

Yes! The subtly flared fenders should have been pulled out more.
As for the plastic pieces near the fender - that is weird. The body shop just reconstructed the wheel arch in metal and cut the side trim off below the black molding when I had the rust taken care of.
Forgot two more things:
Stronger transmission (dates back to 70hp cars)
Vertical reinforcements between block and cylinders in open-decked block (making it semi-closed like the new STI). Why they only reinforced it horizontally when the piston forces would be acting vertically is beyond me.

Other than the plastic Turbo coolant tank, I love my car, you guys are nuts...

One flaw that a few of us can complain about, the fact that you have to unbolt the exhaust manifolds to change the motor mounts!!!
The only other gripe I have is the introduction of some very nifty features but the omission of some other more common ones... for instance, Legacies come with auto-up-
and-down driver's window, a Hill-Holder for MT, a gas cap you can't lose, and stuff like that. But what about having a timer on the rear window defog, or sedan rear seat backs that fold down?
But that's minor stuff though, nothing will ever make me hate my Legacy

Don't get me wrong , of course! I love my Electric Barbarella! I'm working on my second book with her as a hero. She takes out a Brabus Benz at the end to considerable pain to herself. Good thing about cars, though, you can always rebuild them.

Plus the money aI mean on spending when I get another job, fuggetaboutit. I drive new cars and apart from the lack of squeeks, there's nothing that's even swayed me away from her yet.

There should be clips holding that plastic piece in front of the rear wheel arch. Previous removal may have broken the clips leading to a shop epoxying them on. They are great for me since you can fix the rust underneath and you don't have to match the whole bottom of the door in front of it. The paint stays the same since it covers that area (which rusts on just about any car eventually).
The cupholders work perfectly in my car. But I redid that entire portion of the console. I'll post pics soon... since I now OWN a digital camera.
People are complaining too much. Sounds like the pussies that drive brand new cars all day at the car mags and say a 300 hp car could use some more "punch". How much did you pay for your car? Exactly. I couldn't imagine having all the amenities I have in my car for less than 4k in any another car. But I have the top of the line trim level, lesser trim levels... I don't know what they got. Start searching the classifieds.
Until 2001, Audi A4 1.8t's and most VW 1.8t's were only pushing 150 hp, some 160. But they still were fun to drive and sorta quick, especially on the highway. The fact that a Sport Sedan has posted 16.0 and 15.9 times completely stock is incredible for an early 90's family sedan. It doesn't matter what number is behind those times. If your car is that fast, then your car is that fast. People that look to hp numbers for comfort are usually lacking in other areas. End Rant.

I prefer not having a timer (though it would be nice if it shut itself off when you turned off the car), and LS/LSi/Turbo models do have folding rear seats. If you want some, I have a set of decent-condition leather front and back seats from a gray LSi that I'm not using; just figure out how to get them from Upstate NY to Florida and you can have them cheap.

They're cool cuz they have all the extras (map pockets behind front seats, folding rear seats, height adjustable driver seat, fore/aft adjustable headrests).
Brat4by4 wrote:People are complaining too much.
The purpose of this thread was to discuss some faults of our cars. We don't complain much in other threads.

In any case, I intend to eventually correct most of the issues I've brought up.

Yeah what the hell is the deal with the spark plugs, Why do I have to remove both the airfilter box and the windshield washer fluid just to change them, that's just a lil annoying. Yeah, don't get me wrong, I love my baby. Only way I could love her more is if she had a turbo and a manual. Only thing I could conpare it to would be a Maxima.

If you have small, girly hands, you can get them out without removing that stuff. Just takes about an hour and multiple lascerations to your hand and forearm.

yes this is definitely turning into a bitching fest.... lol
The spark plugs are cake to change. You can remove the air box, but it's not necessary. The only thing I take out is the windshield washer fluid bottle. I just flip it up on the engine.
Compared to some of the other cars I've worked on.....these engines are absolute cake to change the plugs.

Yeah, our plugs are easy to change! It takes me about 20 minutes to do it very carefully and thoroughly. Find any other boxer engine that's that easy.

haha, no kidding. My old GL-10 is a pain in the arse to change the plugs. One of them I need one of those tools with a u-joint in the socket extension to get it comfortably. I don't "NEED" it I guess, but it sure makes things easier.

Theyre easy for a flat motor, but not in general. I'd take a honda any day.
