Steve it's like you're posting for me. I 100% totally agree with everything you've said here.
Cops have worked hard to earn my disrespect, too. Given a situation where I notice someone aiming a gun at a cop, and have a choice to yell to warn him... I probably would just keep walking.
What a terrible thing to say, I know. But hey, they've worked hard to get me to think like that. And no, not just because of tickets, either. Let's just say that the Nazi-esque qualities of the law enforcement in this state are solely responsible for my move to NV; I've lived here all my life and never thought I'd have to move. I'm not going any further into it than that.

Man...why you guys gotta hate?!!?
My chosen career is that of being a police officer. I really don't like it when some officers ruin the public's perception of policing. The police have helped me a lot in the past...granted I do live in Oregon which is very different from some other states, and I will agree with you that some officers do have their own agendas and do not uphold their responsibility to the best of their abilities...
That said...you will need the assistance of an officer sometime, and you will be very thankful that they are there!

I don't have to read this whole topic to say I pretty much hate cops.
I mean I got a ticket doing 92mph in a 45mph. What kinda crap is that? it's only a little over double. He could have at least lowered it a few mph.
In my defense, that particulare stretch of road should have had at least a 55-65mph speed limit.

Well at least he didn't see that I was racing a 3000gt. I guess that thing was way too far behind. I should have slowed down after crushing him. Thats what I get for trying to rub it in. I bet that guy was laughing his ass off.

So you hate cops because you were driving double the speed limit and they didn't cut you a break...createnew wrote:I don't have to read this whole topic to say I pretty much hate cops.

Am I missing something here?

I hope you get pulled over more in the future and they take your license from you.
you probably started bitching at him about it, or had a smartass attitude, and that didn't help anything.
my worst traffic event ever was when I was traveling down a windy two lane backroad behind someone doing 25mph (in a 30).
I came to a straight strech that had a curve in the distance, plenty of room for me to pass (but illegal for me to do so) in my hurry to get to work, I went around the slow car.
as I came around them and was in the opposing lane, a cop car rounded the curve and was headed right for me, caught me red handed.
so I slowed down, pulled over, and waited on him.
when he came to my window, I said I was sorry, I'm really late and was trying to get to work on time, I know what I did was wrong and that it's not like me to do something like that.
he took my DL, registration and insurance, and I made off with a simple warning and him telling me to slow down and take it easy.
got a writeup for being late to work, but sure as hell alot less painful than getting a traffic ticket.
Cops seek one main thing when they catch you red handed and pull you over, and that's for you to be polite, show respect, and look them square in the eye and be honest.
I don't see why so many people have such a hard time with this.

I must apologize, Nick, I don't mean to hate on cops in general, it's just tough to believe there are still honest ones somewhere out there. It's probably the area I'm in and the things I've seen; I've had very scant few decent experiences involving the law enforcement officials.
But if I were caught going 92 in a 45, I would be apologetic and expect a ticket... I haven't gotten one in two years, by the way. If you knew me you'd be impressed.

I've only gotten tickets with the polite rigamarole. My warnings came when I gave the cops attitudes (of course, those were the few times I wasn't actually doing anything) or when I pulled out my old Sylvania work ID (they gave the cops tons of OT money every day and I had been told to show my ID if I ever got pulled over). My problem with cops (generally the town ones as the states here are very pro) is the cocky attitude and picking on citizens for minor infractions while criminals run rampant and the worst driving offenders race by. Especially the Harley bikers, they never pull those pricks over. That would be fine if they'd let me run them off the road for purposely blasting their illegal exhaust in my open windows. That's the thing - for most people they need cops, but me, I'd rather be free to take care of my own problems. However, that's an unrealistic expectation, I know.
My other problem, admittedly, is less with cops and more with the courts. The few times the cops do their jobs and nail some child-molesting fuck, the courts let the dickwad go. Oh, level 3 sex offender with 80% or better chance of recidivism? That's ok, he says he won't do it anymore.
I have actually met some good cops, but a lot of cockwads, too. Unfortunately for the better ones (which don't stay long writing tickets anyway), the jerk-offs are the ones most people see and always the ones they remember. Believe it or not (with all my spouting off), I have a sort-of friend who's a state trooper. He's really all about just being a cop now, so I hardly talk to him, but I don't wish him anything bad.
I even went on a pissed-off rant when I read about that actor from 'Bronx Tale' that shot that cop in NY recently. Friggin' loser would've gotten a trespassing and a gun charge, gotten almost nothing for it, but the prick kills the cop instead. Respect due to the cop for getting off all his rounds as HITS on the two bastards and he might still be around if they'd used a smaller gun. Cops like that are all right.

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
My mother worked 25 years at the State Police and I got my share of tickets. I also got off a couple times when I shouldn't have. I have a pretty messed up story about how police can be corrupt, criminal and pretty dangerous that is too long to post and kind of upsetting too. It's naive to think that cops are always the good guys but I agree that you should be respecful because, if for no other reason, you don't want to provoke a man with a gun and the power to lawfully use it to shoot you, that's not to mention dogs, mace, stun guns all of their arsenal can be legally used against you if you push it too far. That said, I think people dislike cops because they have power that average people don't and because many people have had negative experiences with them. Going 92 in a...well anywhere really, is a sure fire way the get the blood boiling in an officer of the law. They assume that someone going that fast may have just done something terrible. Think about it, if you're a cop and you see some guy fly by at that rate of speed (excluding DC and Montana
) you've got to think worst case scenario.

Yeah, I think that's the main force behind it; the cops just have so much power at their disposal and they're just humans - susceptible to the same emotions as you or I. A lot of cops also seem to thrive on the power trip that comes with the job.
It's also tough for a civilian to make a cop answer for a misuse of power; and absolute power corrupts absolutely... so when cops have power that approaches absolute....
