we don't have required hours of instruction by parents. But I definitely got way more than I needed to pass any state's requirements. I would estimate that I drove 5000 miles when I had my temps...yeah, got a lot of experience under my belt immediately.

And my mom started calling my "inexperienced" as soon as I got my liscence (she never said that before) like I forgot everything!

(obviously 5k isn't a whole lot, but it's like she totally ignored all the learning I'd been doing from my dad my whole life...)

Parents aren't a great way to go for teaching honestly. I see just as many (if not more) stupid moves from middle agers as I do from people my age.

We had 12 hours required, 6 driving, 6 observation, while taking driver's ed. As well as 30 hours of classroom time.

I'd rather we got to do more driving, and didn't just learn the rules, but learn how to drive the damn cars. Do powerslides, learn how to control in ice, etc. But no, that's never the emphasis, it's to teach to drive to the driver's test, not to the real world

In Maryland when I had my learner's, the "Rookie Driver" graduated licensing system required 40 hours of parental instruction before you could get your provisionals. My brother just got his learner's, and it's now up to 60. I think my parents are pretty good drivers (although my mom needs to hang up the phone -- especially because we drive stick-shifts), so I got some good instruction on how to drive.

I guarantee that bumping the requirement up to 60 hours will make it even less likely for parents to do the instruction. Regardless, at least some parents are doing it, which is good.

we had 50 daylight, 25 night light hours required before we got our license in washington. Didn't help the terrible driver problem though

I used to think that retesting would solve alot of problems, but I come to realize it probably wouldn't. Maybe with the old gippers on the road it would. Most people would take the test driving perfectly normal, and once they passed, would get on the cell phone and resume driving like shit.

My solution? Birdshot - Cheney style. Pepper their cars with the sawd-off in the glove box and teach 'em a lesson. Especially useful against convertibles and ragtops.

Just kidding.

^^Maybe, maybe not. With the way some drive, I wonder if they could curb all their bad habits for a road test. I don't think so.
