Anyone ever see the video of Seinfeld going to a Porsche meet? He says something like, here are the most boring people in the world, who know all sorts of facts nobody wants to hear. He also wrote a funny article in Automobile about the Carrera GT.

I want to drive a Porsche for a weekend or a trip rather than daily. Too attention getting for me.

I think a lot of people hate on Porsches because they don't have the skill (or balls) to properly drive them...I sure don't, but I can't wait to do some PCA driving schools to learn how to get the most out of a 911, 944, 914, Boxster, etc.

Once you learn how to do it right, there are few cars that can outcorner a 911 at a track day...

All you guys who say they are "boring" cars need to enter a corner at over 100mph in a 911 and try to have the cajones to keep your foot on the floor...make sure you bring a diaper!

Sorry I don't like Porsches - you should be an autoomtive journalist. Preference in cars has little to do with balls, but maybe that's some kind of personal problem. I don't like Porsches because they all look like Easter candy that has been left out too long and have looked that way forever. The few Porsches I do like were the ones that took real balls to drive - not the anesthetized ones they sell today so the day traders don't end ass up in a hedge. Maybe they aren't as capable as the ones now but they had character then and I really couldn't care any less about hundreths of a second around a race track. I drive because I enjoy it not to prove something.

My friend sold his Boxster after 4 months because it's a girl car. But I guess his Birkin with a 250 HP engine would be pussy in comparison to the all mighty investment banker toy made by decendents of Nazi collaborators. And the Birkin's fun at any speed which is useful when traffic seldom allows speeds over 80 and the staties get their money from writing tickets and they all make over 6 figures.

I can easily afford a new Boxster or a used 911, but I'll be buying an Elise when I'm done remodelling my house.

I actually bought the Legacy so I wouldnt have to park my Miata in Brooklyn. Im waiting a few more years before I do a supercharger/V8 swap. Should be fun

Small, lightweight cars with decent power are what its all about.

The Elise should be an AWESOME drive.


I have actually driven several 911s. They are nice cars for what they are, but they have a much different feel to them. The Porsches are hard to really enjoy if you cant get their "feel". They are also super expensive to buy/own, and they get more "cred" than they should for being fun sports cars.

The newer Ferraris are actually fun to drive at all speeds - other than having to deal with the racing clutch. They are however, highly uncivilized and are noisy, cramped, and bouncy.

I would love to have an Elise or Exige...It is definately in my top 10 list of favorite cars...


And Steve...I much prefer the earlier, much lighter Porsches, like my Dad's 1983 911SC (2315 lbs) it is a lot of fun, and doesn't make me feel like a small-dick doctor when I am driving it...

Now...if I had a 1995 911 Cabriolet with Tiptronic...bring on the Porsche owner jokes:lol:

The Birkin looks like a hellova lot of fun too (Lotus 7ish type car eh?!)

For me it was a choice between an Elise and a house... A house isnt as much fun, but its less likely to depreciate.

Ill buy an elise in 4-5 years when they're worth a third less than they are now.

It's a Lotus 7 replica like an older Caterham (before they redesigned the rear suspension) I think, but I'd have to ask him - I'm not completely sure about the suspension. It's basically an expensive pre-built kit where you supply the engine, but he bought it completely disassembled and built a Ford Duratec for it. Actually, I think it was a Duratec... Anyway, it had a Cosworth head. He told me he likes the Elise, but it's a sissy car compared to the Birkin. He took his financial planner out for a drive and the guy literally ran into the bathroom to crap afterwards.

The Exige is sick, but with the roads around here I think it would be too stiff a ride, plus it's nice to have a removeable top for driving along the coast. Oh yeah, and the Elise is cheaper and I'm having a tough enough time letting myself buy that. Yeah, at least they depreciate like a rock dropped in a pond. You can already find them in the low thirties.

911SCs are one of the best in my book since they were still mostly the original with better body protection and engines. If I were going to get a 911 it would probably be that with a 2.7 Carrera RS body kit. Don't know if I'd go for the Carrera script, but I love the bumpers and duck tail.

Though for impresive Porsches I don't think the Can Am 917/30 can be beaten. I saw one running around Lime Rock and I can't imagine what it was like when they were really battling it out back in the day. Mark Donohue was insane. All those Can Am guys were insane.

Never drove a Ferrari unfortunately, though I've been in some older ones. I wouldn't want to own one, but I'd love to drive one. That same damn friend with the Birkin's brother-in-law has an F40 (one of my all time favorites) in Georgia and he keeps rubbing that in. I followed one around Monterey and watched flames come out the wastegate exhaust with every shift, but that's nowhere near as cool as driving it. I'd really have to drive that on a track and take some classes (though not in that order) since that thing's not only in a whole other league to what I've driven, but worth more than I ever want to have to owe anyone.

I dont know what you guys are really into, but I happen to have driven several Maserati coupes as well. They actually handle VERY nicely - very Ferrari like. They are also very luxurious and happen to be a TON more comfortable. Their prices have also dropped like a rock. A decent used '02 can be had for about 40k.

(I work at a used car dealership where we tend to get in some pretty nice cars every once in a while).

Talking about Porsches - for some reason the new cayman seems to be tanking when it hits the used market. I took one for a brief ride and it was actually pretty nice. I also happen to think that the earlier body 911s were super nice. The driving experience in one of those is WAYYY different than the new bodied ones.

One of my favorite cars (if I had to have a backseat) would have to be the M5 though. I LOVE the power

No way - that car's ugly! I don't know why Subaru has so much damn trouble with design. The Legacy now isn't bad, but isn't all that amazing either. Even their show cars are unimpressive. Mazda's have been sick lately, though I don't go for the new crossover one as much. I hope the next 3 draws its looks from the Ryuga, Nagare, and the Kabura. The aggressive front end would get rid of the bulging one on the current hatch which is the one thing I don't like as much. From some angles and without my contacts in it could resemble a PT Cruiser if I didn't know cars.

I wrote the new Maserati Quattroporte into my 3rd novel. I try to give cars I like to the decent characters that I don't think are appreciated enough.

Speaking of your novels Steve, and while we're already have gone from the new Impreza, what's the status quo on your publishing adventure?

I'm still anxiously awaiting a signed copy .

I'm waiting for the cover designer to contact me as he's done reading it and my editor's going through it for the final time. Then I have to go through her suggestions, then she probably goes through it again, then I guess it can go to printing. I believe interior layout design is pretty set.

Trying to get back on track-
I hear the next Legacy is going to be bigger than the current one. I wish they'd build an Impreza wagon that would be the size of the original Legacy and if they added a diesel I'd probably buy it even it being fairly ugly.

I wish they would make an impreza the size of a justy, but with an ej257 in it.

Hmmmmm, why in the hell would they leave the big ass STi wing on it?

I like the new front end (non vaginal) but I don't like that they're killing the sedan, even though I always liked the Impreza wagons better then the sedans anyways.

Have you seen the newest pics? Check out the links on www.windingroad.com. Even uglier than I thought and the interior is worse than the old one. It's like a hideous old-Korean knock off of a Mazda3. The side glass looks like it actually IS from a Mazda3. How is Hyundai kicking Subaru's ass at design? And they suck balls in the WRC so it's not like these designs are for function over style.

I'm giving a lot (I mean a LOT) of thought to just dumping everything I have now and getting an 08 Forester before they change it in 09.

I won't be able to afford any 07 before it's too late, so the BL/BP Legacies are out, because I don't like the way the 08s look.

I haven't liked the Impreza since 06, and I DEFINITELY don't like the new one. I mean, my God, yeah, I am almost ready to say the Edsel-nose looks good now!

The Forester is the only one that still looks halfway-decent, especially in the new CrossSports version (boiiiiiiing!). And I know that's gonna pretty much carry over into 08.

I'll take as absolute best care I can of the Forester so it lasts for 20 or 30 years. By then, I'm sure I'll want nothing to do with whatever form of personal transportation we have by then, and I'll just take the bus.

This is sad.
