We're always glad to see new people show up on the site. You'll find out that this is just the tip of the iceberg. A person can gain quite a bit of knowledge in a very short time by keeping up on posts & other people's builds.
Never hesitate to ask questions, but only do so after you've exhausted all possible options using the forum's search engine to find your answer first. The only thing looked down upon around here is having 50 posts all asking the same question, which no one decided to take the time to look up an answer to.
Other than that, have fun & enjoy yourself here!

I checked my codes today... and she threw a 22 and 23. Could these be related to the carb fuel filter being there?

possibly.
you probably just need a new knock sensor and that'll get rid of your 22...

Before buying a knock sensor, get a fresh fuel filter (a tune-up would be better) & get rid of that carb filter while you are @ it.
Reset the ECU & see what happens.
If the carb filter restricts fuel flow enough the car will run lean & you'll get knock - ? a code from the knock.
If the code is still there after the above is completed I'd get a fresh k-sensor.

Okay so I deleted the carb fuel filter (haven't gotten around to the normal filter), but now the car smells like it's running rich. Should I clear the codes and check them again?

do you know the last time you changed that 02 sensor?
that could change ALOT of things. i'd figure out when the last time it was swapped and put a new one in.
other thatn that check and make sure all your hoses are connected, my MAF i think somehow got disconnected and for the last 5 days i was getting 12mpg instead of my usual 27....

Would it hurt anything other than my pocket to just change the O2 sensor straight out? Something leads me to believe that the PO hadn't changed it recently.

If you want to replace a cheaper sensor. Replace the Temp sensor for the ECU not for the gauge see if that makes a difference. If you call up your local subaru dealer make it clear to them that you want the ECU temperature sensor. They usually have them in stock.

Does the ECU's temp sensor have anything to do with the air/fuel mixture?

Do you mean the atmospheric sensor inside of the ECU or the coolant temperature sensor? Either way yes.
If you mean the single lead coolant temp sensor with a spade connector then no it has nothing to do with A/F mix as it isnt even connected to the ECU.

No, it wouldn't hurt anything to replace the oxygen sensor even if the current sensor is good.

but you shouldn't unless you have to because they're like $110

There are plenty of O2 sensors on Ebay for under $30 shipped. The ones I have my eye on are Beck Arnley brand.

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrright.
but your car is only as good as the parts its made of.
id rather take the gauge and get somehting thats going to last personally, i looked into the cheapo ones and i heard they dont last very long

There are also Bosch brand sensors for under $30 for later model Legacies....

Get the bosch one atleast. I preferably learn the harder way with non-oem parts then end up getting oem. A recent mistake, purchasing a NON-oem NAPA thermostat.....

Any 3 or 4 wire will work but I do know that you can find Bosch universal units for fairly cheap. I converted one of my legacy to 4 wire hoping it would give a better reading.
Read this

Then look at this auction (just an example of many)

Someone check this for me but The Bosch part #15726 is the 3 wire universal that will fit our cars and the Bosxh part # 15732 is the 4 wire universal for our cars

Thanks a lot ciper. I'll order one of these Bosch sensors and let everyone know how it goes when I have it installed.

I think I need one too. My car is sucking back alot of fuel. N/A keep in mind and I am only getting like 300km a tank and it definitely smells rich and runs rough. I am also wondering if it could be because of the NON oem thermostat that is possibly making the engine run a few degrees cooler then what it should therefore not running as efficiently.

So I got around to the oh-so-necessary exhaust test:

whats the difference between the 3 or 4 wire?
measurement capability?
accuracy?
markup

Seemed smooth. Then you hit the gas again and a cloud of oil or was it just super rich?? Maybe change the PCV valve.

4-wire sensors are a little more precise/accurate because they have a signal ground wire; 3-wire sensors ground through their bodies.

It's been running incredibly rich since I removed the carb fuel filter. There isn't a hint of burning oil. I still need to change the O2 sensor, which will happen by the end of the week, hopefully. Perhaps running rich is the reason for its stuttering under heavy load. Codes are showing 22, 23, 24. It runs damn near perfect, although rich, until I'm on the gas about 75% or more.

i dont know where you're at but here in MT, there's regs requiring that ethanol be dispensed within the gas that you buy. kills my mileage, mabey you have that too there?
random i know
