Sounds like water. The only drive thing I've seen eaten like that is a Merc Alpha outdrive that got water in it. The fluid was the absolute worst stink I've ever experienced, just slightly less gagging than a direct skunk blast, but even more horrible smelling. Almost like decaying and burnt organics. Cracking the case smelled out an enormous 2-story boat garage bay in winter. Also looked very burnt.
I wonder if it sat partially submerged somewhere with a bad seal.
