Really Zach?!?!?

You would take that and rally the piss out of it through snow and assorted other things?

Doubtful, very doubtful!

:-D

a 1st or 2nd gen wagon, with a turbo and 5-speed
roof rack
fuel cell
DMS 50s or something similar
skid plates
studded snow tires with at least two spares
block heater
HO alternator
spare battery
lots of lights

oh, and don't forget the 70/30 coolant mix

Any thoughts on my idea?
Personally for a thrash fest like your talking about id start with.. oh I don't know, a 90-91 N/A w/4EAT so I wasn't trashing a prime piece of Subaru history in a one shot race. Then Id toss in an EJ22t. TMIC, LSD, WRX springs and struts ( Insta 1-2" lift). The list goes on and on from there.

Safety, Reliability, Speed. In that order.

Having the faster/cooler/best looking car doesn't make a winner. "Some times slower is faster" or "Slow and steady wins the race" take full meaning in a gignormous ralley.

Why 5 speed? From my understanding it isnt so technical that you need to be shifting constantly and the possibility of getting stuck somewhere is great so an Auto would in my mind be necessary.

Besides you could always wire up switches to lock the center diff and torque converter The center diff on the 5 speed sucks balls when trapped in mud or snow.

I hate the automatic and I hate the center clutch packs. They kind of suck and can't transfer much power rearward. Oh, and my 2nd 4eat is leaking and slow to shift.

The 5-speed gives a 50/50 split driving along normally compared to 90/10, and has the potential to transfer more torque rearward.

Maybe I should rephrase that to add a 12kg group n center diff and rear lsd.

A locked properly functioning center automatic diff should be able to transfer 100% torque rearwards.

But yeah the 12kg center diff and a rear suretrak would be cool! Any idea which models got the suretrak?

no, I don't think those center clutches can fully lock, or transfer much more than half the max engine torque.

I think all the STi R180s have helical rear diffs. Although hey, now that you mention it, I'd rather have the 6-speed, dccd, and front and rear helical diffs.

I locked the center diff with 4 people in the car and one of the front axles removed, making it RWD AND I drove over a mountain.

I promise it worked. 100% torque to the rear.
