obviously. hence the post above

ditto

when the time comes i will...?

you're also guilty, im not being a duche. i'm just pointing out 1 situation where congress will do what is in the best interest of the american economy. that one situation has not happend in awhile and judging by our current situation wont happen again for awhile

evolutionmovement wrote:Emissions and safety standards have helped imports more than anything as several big marques had histories of safety innovation that they were ready to cash in on. Emissions standards were easier for imports to meet upon introduction due to their smaller engines and, in some case, more advanced technology that they were already making. Emissions standards have been the greatest thing to happen to the automobile - they've gotten more reliable, faster, and more efficient (enough to counter all the weight added by safety and unnecessary gizmos). Most importantly, our air is much better to breathe. If you don't believe that, visit a country where they have none.
I haven't read this entire thread, but Steve is dead on in the above quoted section. Cars today make more power with less displacement, less fuel, and less emissions then they did in the 70's and earlier.

The late 70's saw the introduction of the econobox car. The 80's saw the infancy of the improvement on technology due to emissions regs. This technology was often times cumbersome and its effectiveness was questionable in my mind. The 90's saw the beginning of the technology refinement in automobiles, and it's just continued.

It's quite laughable how this thread went from looking at the new Impreza coupe thing into a battle royale about cars that aren't sold in the US lol

You guys rock :D

Oh...and SubaruNation...I'm not quite British...actually from New Zealand...but laughable is just a higher-order type thinker word that works well in term papers and the like.

Spencer...I think your JDM parts truck ran into a bridge or something...it's missing the roof off the trailer

Interesting this came up. I watched the following Top Gear clip the other night:

Old cars vs. their newer generations.

My turn.

I won't respond to everything, but there is NO SUCH THING as a transportation company that is 100% confined to its country of origin.

You Harley fans, please read the following article carefully. If this upsets you, sorry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harley-Davidson_VRSC

And of course the government regulates safety. You can have whatever blind faith you want in the automakers, but if they didn't have to up their safety standards, they wouldn't. Go on Youtube and search for car test crashes in China. Here's a good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F06LjugtIUo

See how their vehicles perform in test crashes, and realize that their safety laws aren't near as stringent.

Now, emissions. Let's take two of my cars and compare them.

My 79 Subaru wagon had a 1.6-liter EA71 4cyl engine with something like 65hp and 80lb-ft. It itself was quite advanced in terms of emission reduction for its day, with the SEEC-T system Subaru had devised, it was able to pass U.S. emissions without a catalytic converter.

Now, let's take my Honda. A 1.5-liter L15A 4cyl engine with 109hp and 105lb-ft. While it does use a cat, it is a CARB-certified LEV in all 50 states, which I don't believe the Subaru could claim in its day.

Now I don't have any emissions statistics on either engine, but both cars have idled in my garage for a significant amount of time, and needless to say, the air in the garage is a lot more breathable after the Honda than it was after the Subaru.

Regardless of my poor argument about the emissions, the Honda has a smaller engine, but makes nearly DOUBLE the power and torque. In fact, on paper, it's not only faster than my 79, but faster than my Legacy as well.

Look at this page of the C&D article for the 1990 LS AWD 5spd sedan: http://www.legacycentral.org/articles/lsawd/lsawd_5.htm

Specifically the 0-60 time.

Now look at this test of a Honda Fit 5spd:
http://www.gayot.com/lifestyle/automobi ... a_fit.html

Specifically the 0-60 time (third paragraph).

Cars are indeed getting faster and more efficient. There's no arguing that. Sorry.
