it's better for anything not in a straight line, unless you have a huuuuge flat torque curve

Personally I really like my '05 6mt. It is soooooo smooth and shifts very fast compared to any 5mt I've had. Now if I wanted to drag race and do frumrollz I would have sprung for the PPG box.

I will say that a usable first gear would be nice.

That's the issue for me. I like the taller gears, but I also like a nice shifting gear box. The SS 5MT is anything but smooth. Maybe a new gear set would fix that.....but I don't know.

Mine feels like a dowel in modeling clay... ugh

Stock shift knob? Mine sucked until I replaced it with a $.95 wood knob and it feels notchy, but alright. Fits the character of the car. Kind of like banging a bony chick which certainly beats the old shift feel that was like wearing two condoms and one of those Mormon sex-suits.

Its hard to say. The 6mt has double cone syncros all around except 2nd, which has a triple. Forced oiling is nice too.

lol, no wonder you are a writer. You have a serious way with words.

Any way to get a translation on that?

the "cone synchros" refer to cone clutches on the synchronizers for each gear, and I'm not really sure of what I'm talking about because I've never worked on transmissions so...

uh Phil, this is where you provide sweet visual aides, I mean, you did work at Gearboxtech

(side note: stupid dog decided to eat my bookmark in Midnight in a Perfect World, I hope it hurts when he shits it out, well, I hope it goes that way)

Essentially you have more friction surfaces to get everything at matching speeds quicker before everything gets locked together. Hmmm. I'll need some time for a better english version.

that makes a lot of sense to me, now unless he was talking about the forced oiling part I think you're good Dan

The 6mt has an actual oil pump in it, rather than relying purely on spash oiling like the 5mt.

What do the Datsun 510 guys use for their big-power swaps (other than Ford 9in.)? Their OEM rear ends were R160s.

I can't answer that question Steve, but I think the 240/260/280z owners go for R200 and even R230 rears.

R230 = 230mm or 9.05” in diameter... wow

Doesn't the orange STi drift car use a Skyline rear end?

Is there any way to beef up a rear end without changing cases? Custom cut gears out of different material or such or would that be prohibitive? I'm not necessarily asking in regards to Subaru, but it's still a pertinent question.

R32 Skyline used a R200 diff

maybe stronger gears Steve, they'd definitely be one off custom as I can't seem to find anything for the R160 with a quick search, I found that NISMO made race ring and pinions for R180 and maybe R200?

still though everyone seems to snap axles when going RWD, it seems that beefing up by upgrading the axle carrier also seems to entail stronger axle shafts

so theoretically, you can beef up the ring and pinion and axle shafts and put in a nasty quality diff until you make so much power you torque the case from it's mountings or break the damn thing

later STi R180s also have helical LSDs, while we're used to VLSDs in Leg Turbos, as the fluid in the VLSD heat cycles it loses its viscosity and the LSD becomes worthless, this doesn't happen with helical LSDs

so for our cars, due to the weight and torque of a modded Legacy Turbo, a newer STi R180 with the helical diff and beefed up axle shafts should be optimal for RWD

I'll try it next summer

The only thing with the helical R180's is that they are a 3.545, vs. the '04-05 3.9 clutch type. Helical diffs are nice, but I think that I want something that will lock when slipping happens, instead of a torque biasing rear diff. The helical needs some traction to be able to transfer the torque to the other wheel. If there is none, it acts like its open.

If you are spending your time on nothing but tarmac, a helical is great. If you want to have any fun on gravel or ice, then the clutch type rear diff would be advantageous. '
