You've done your due-diligence. You seem satified. As long as the prices in your area point to this being a good deal, buy it and don't look back. I would at this point.

Yeah I've worked my rear end off, pretty much. :) I think it's a good price, $11,900 is the "Fair" listing on KBB and I'd place this car at Good. Not Excellent, but if I fix those paint touch up spots, and spend some time in the engine cosmetics, it'll be pretty close.

I don't want you guys to think I was dead-set to buy this thing, regardless of what any of you said. Not the case at all.

Don't use the Uncle Scotty cocktail!!!

Hmm bad for Legacies eh?

I'll check it out later, on the way out for now...

Thanks though!! But FYI, they didn't do the fluid swap, so no worries for now.

i used the trade in kbb values. more like the real world price.

anyway, it sounds like you have done everything except get under it and look at things.

if you get it, great.

the newer one looks good, but no pics of engine bay but with 10k miles it should be clean.

i like newer and less miles even though it is more.

Well I didn't get under it personally, at least in the front, but I said that before. Yeah newer is better of course... :) But it's quite a bit more, too. We can probably afford to take some extra money out of another fund, but I'd rather not.

777, I'm reading a bit of the Scotty thread now. Hmm, interesting eh? Honestly I've got OEM fluids in both our cars ('00 RS, '01 OB LL Bean). Just that of course everyone talks about the cocktail. So I figured I'd try it, but hmm perhaps not.

I'm perfectly happy with OEM, never had any complaints with it.

Does the Carfax show what states it's been registered in? Like Louisiana, for instance?? That car looks like a flood victim... maybe new on the dealer lot when Katrina blew in, before it was ever registered. See if you can find out what dealer first took delivery of the vehicle.

No, it's an in-state car only. It was serviced a few times in Syracuse, my guess is the same as the current owner's, in that it was a business commuter car, back and forth. Its origin is listed as Oxford, PA.

FYI, Bill Rapp Superstore in Syracuse is listed as a place that the car was serviced at, three times. Probably regular maintenance, but I emailed them to see if they're allowed to disclose what was performed on the vehicle.

If the car was flooded out there will be mud/sand or mud/sand residue in weird hard to reach places for that type of dirt to pile up like under the rear seat cushion, & center console + behind the dash plastic.....

Some one I knew bought a flood car & the only clue of it being flooded was the Mud under the back seat cushion.
There was no rust on anything under the hood or on the car.

I doubt this car was flooded, but checking will not hurt.

The '06 sounds nice, but I don't think I'd be willing to pay 3X as much for it & use it as a daily driver.

Yeah that's the trick. :)

Supposedly the Manheim auction has a pretty strict background check, and this one came through clean.

Hey guys.

Dunno why I didn't think of this before, but here's a cut/paste of the CarFax records...

FYI I've already emailed Bill Rapp in Syracuse to see if it's possible to disclose what the services were. Probably regular maintenance.

I do see that wheel bearings were replaced, but I had that done in my RS a few years back as well.

Hey guys. :) Not sure if anyone will read this, but...

Fluids were topped off, tranny fluid was flushed with new OEM. Everything looks good, I should have the compression/leakdown results today, I believe. :)

I emailed SoA and they sent me a list of things that were specified at purchase, for options:
SUBWOOFER/AMPLIFIER
CENTER ARMREST EXTENSION
Sedan Splash Guard Set
Spoiler - White
ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE LABEL
FLOORMATS, CARPETED OFF BLACK
05 LEGACY OIK
05 LEGACY ORG
AUTO-DIMMING MIRROR/COMPASS
SECURITY SYS. PERIMETER ALARM
The shifter I don't think is STi, it's too short. The shifter arm is brass-colored according to the owner, so I'm not sure what it is. But the LegacyGT.com guys also don't think it's STi.

That's minor for now, though.

Anyway I'll keep you guys updated. :)

I love these newer turbo Legs.
I have a theory about the rust under the hood. I think that maybe it was driven on a freshly salted roadway at freeway speeds when it was new. You throw in some 18 wheelers and a nice thin mist of salt laden water gets ingested into the underhood area. Now let that stay on all those thinly protected fasteners for 2 or 3 years before the reseller cleans it up with a steam bath and, abracadabra, ugly rust. Of course this is all speculation on my part cause the last time we had a good snow in my town, 1st generation Legacy SS's were still rolling off the assembly line in Japan.

Yeah it was commuting between PA and Syracuse, NY which is upstate and thus gets a lot of road salt. I also believe that's the case; only, this car probably never had its engine bay cleaned. I spent 26 years in NH, which gets pretty rough winters. My engines never had that much rust, but then again I clean them.

I have agreed to buy the car. I have a buyer for my RS, and both transactions will take place this week, probably Wed/Thurs but I'm not positive yet.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll take pics once it's cleaned up and all. :)

I was thinking about replying to this not long ago, actually!

I picked up the GT on Friday, after selling my RS two days prior. So I've now had the car for two days. :)

So far I love it. It was pretty clean when I picked it up, though I did vacuum it again myself, and used a lot of Vinylex on the dash. It's pretty obvious that, while the old owner wasn't abusive on the interior, it also wasn't polished very often.

This...thing....is....F-A-S-T! :) It's unusual for me to step on the gas and have the car actually..........go.

I'm at work today but just went outside to do a walkaround. The tires are about 7 lbs. low, but I'll break out the air compressor when I get home, and check the spare too.

Pics will follow in a couple days I hope. We need to wax my wife's OB, so we'll just find a free day to do both cars, within the next few weeks. After that, more pics.

Thanks for all the feedback, I appreciated it. I feel that most things were fairly addressed by the seller, though. Those couple of parts have some surface rust, but perhaps I can clean them up and prime/paint them with some engine paint or something. I'll figure it out.

Zinc galvanizing spray. You can get it at electrician supply places. Will beat using paint (though you can also use it as a primer anyway). My engine compartment in the Mazda doesn't look much better with over 73k and 3 New England years. They leave that shit bare metal and I don't give a shit about it, so it rusts. Another thing you could use, which works if you use it frequently, is to get this marine wax protectant. I forget the name, but it comes in a spray can and you can use it to keep shit from rusting or deteriorating as much. Good for electrical and rubber as well. I recommend using it a few times a year as it goes away with the engine heat and don't breathe any in. I don't know exactly how bad it is for the human body, but it seems worse than Krylon paint to me.

But the zinc spray will make the wax stuff pretty unnecessary.

Cool I'll check in to that.

I'm not sure about the toxicity of that stuff, either. But I remember working with Marine-Tex about 11 years ago, man that stuff was potent!! It's a two (or three, I forget) -part adhesive. VERY strong.
