It's in the gauge cluster. The VSS is probably fine. The cable either popped out of the back of the cluster, or and the more likely culprit, the base piece's inards connected to the transmission/diff are broke.

You should be able to remove the speedo cable base piece pretty easily and check to see whether it needs to be replaced.

i had the same issue just yesterday...I unplugged the BPV hose from recirc and drove it to find it was bleeding out at atmospheric pressure . I replaced it with my 7mgte supra one and it works great. I also had surging so i disconnected the boost solenoid and ran a controller.

ok so i have my required dash trim taken out and i have the cluster taken out right now too. just as i suspected the speedo cable is not connected to the back of the gauge cluster.

Dos anyone have any recommendations for how to get the speedo cable conected to the back of the cluster? my cable is immobile :/ :?

thanks :D

im uploading pics too

Haha it's like that on everyone's car. The easiest (not to be confused with 'easy') way is to put the cluster in partially and then use your right hand and fit it behind the cluster and try to get it to go in.

You might have to rotate the speedo cable to get it to line up right. It should snap on once you get it positioned correctly.

nice!

ok cool thanks im going to try that now :D

Update: FML are you kidding me this is crazy.

im going to take out the side that goes into the transmission and hopefully that will give me some slack because there is no way in he;; this is going to work.

ugh!!!!

the only effective way i can see to do this is to cut a small hole in the top of the panel that the instrument cluster rests on from inside the dash, behind that trim.
that way i can reach my hand in there and make it work

LAME!
this is one of those days that i wish i had epic chines contortionist skills :D

if this doesn't do it then its definitely the part that is in the transmission.

i got it in w/ some zip-ties to keep the cable in place, while i maneuvered the cluster. all set :D

so i fixed everything from before, all the CEL's are gone.
except for some reason though now i cannot accelerate....?

i fixed the boost leaks that were happening, and replaced the O2, ...etc.

the only thing i changed is i swapped out my BPV for a different one, that i thought would be working.

the problem i think might be is the BPV i switched to, when i blow into it there is not pressure, the air goes right through like its no big deal.

is this a bad thing?

it sounds sweet when i let off of the boost (that i can't get), like squirrels or something lol.

i can SEE 10lbs of boost on my gauge, however when i get there..... nothing happens and i do not go faster.. like at all.

WTF?

so i am going to swap BPV's, in the mean time does anyone know the steps that i need to take to replace my Fuel pump?

that's like the last thing that i can even remotely think is going wrong.
nothing else makes sense.

i know the fuel pump is on the passenger side, underneath the seats somewhere but im not sure where to go from there :/

any ideas or helpful hints?

thanks alot for looking, :-D

also:

if you guys think it's a fuel pump issue, would the pump i need look like this?

i just found this one on Ebay

i just put in a new PCV valve, and a walbro 255 lph fuel pump last night and so far, nothing has changed.

i am still dumping boost for some reason when i try to accelerate.

the car just stalls, and will not go faster. wtf

im going to look into the knock sensor like DV stated in an earlier post and clean the MAF more, maybe that will help.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Have you swapped out the BPV for a properly working one yet?

i've been using two different ones, or trying them at least.

on one of them, if i blow air through the large nipple that runs parallel to the really small one one there is no resistance and the air just flows. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but i switched back to my other... also possibly broken BPV that has mega resistance when i blow through it.

the one that flows air effortlessly sounds awesome when i let off of boost, like squirrels in my car lol.

so im not sure what to think of the contrast between the two..

BUT, i recently purchased a all metal one as a replacement. im not sure if it's a stock subie wrx one or if its an HKS one or what but it doesn't fit right onto my current setup, i am fabbin it up and i will have it done by next week i hope.

Good. You shouldn't be able to blow are through it at all.

FML so the only other thing i can think of is i have these brass pipe fittings as part of my intake, and where they screw together the hole is alot smaller than the entrance holes that the air goes through.

so that might be a restriction...?

im going to borrow a buddy's stock charge pipe, as mine is mangled and check and see if it will take me up to consistent boost.

i also hear the OEM intercoolers leak bad...?

could that be contributing?

all sorted out. took apart everything and re-did everything and cleaned stuff and cried and now we're golden.

just for a tip for those trying to do the speedo cable.... one time i grabbed one of those paint stick mixer things and broke it in half and placed then behind the cable but still on the outside of the hole it goes in... so tit holds the cable out as much as possible and keeps it in once spot. worked alot better than the previous hours or aggrivation and no progress!! lol

yeah exactly. i took zipties and attached them on both sides of the cable itself, then to the two metal walls on the circle where the cacle comes to, and the cluster sits in and it worked.
