Why are cars continuing to bloat more as time passes? Its depressing, in a way. I'd like to see a new one next to a BC, just to see the size difference.

That is huge! WTF?! Plus they took on the gay tail light look of BMW. Seriously, why the hell would you ever design tail lights on the trunk that don't line up with the tail lights on the body of the car? STUPID! Makes it look like you got a replacement trunk off the wrong generation of the car or something. It's a sad day for subaru drivers.

that the bulk of people that are buying new legacies want more leg, shoulder and hip room?Legacy777 wrote:Holy crap!

Our parts catalogue has been updated, so I can pick out a few changes on the new car.
Chassis codes are BM for the Legacy sedan and BR for the Outback wagon.
One of the biggest differences is the front suspension. The front subframe is all one complete assembly. The crossmember and the big U-shaped subframe are all one inseperable piece of metal now.
The engine now has 3 mounts, one that attaches right dead center on the front bottom of the engine, which bolts to the front of the subframe. The two standard mounts are also completely different.
The other big difference is the turbo location. Kinda like the diesel overseas, but not. The headers are equal-length, and the turbo mounts right at their meeting point, right under the crank pulley. There is no traditional uppipe.
A couple other things are different mechanically as well, as the NA EJ25 appears to have a plastic intake manifold, although it's different than the turbo's. It's also now coil-on-plug like the turbo and H6.
It also looks like the rear suspension gets an upper A-arm and a trailing arm instead of a multilink setup like the 4th-gen.
Those are pretty much the big mechanical changes. Most everything else is the same, just redesigned.
As for the size, yeah, it's a shame that it's gotten so big and bloated. But cars get bigger as time goes on. The new Impreza, which is supposed to be a size below our cars, is now bigger than our cars in virtually every dimension. It's not just Subaru either. The Civic and Corolla are now bigger than yesteryear's Accord and Camry. That's how it works.
As for the looks, you all know my opinion. It's just an amalgam of styling cues ripped off from high-end European cars that Subaru desperately wants, but fails, to compete with.
That's subjective though, and only my opinion. So only take that for what it's worth.
But there are two things that really piss me off about this new car, simply because they're ridiculously stupid and show that Subaru no longer intends to build intelligent and useful cars.
First off, the new Legacy has an electrically-actuated parking brake....
...
... so now they have successfully copied BMW's two worst-ever ideas, the other one being iDrive.
Finally, we've conceded that Subarus have never gotten really good fuel economy. They're not terrible, but there are far more fuel-efficient cars than Subaru. So logic then suggests that someone interested in a Subaru doesn't have fuel economy high on their priority list.
So why then does this car have a stupid fucking retarded MPG gauge to the left of the tach that doesn't actually tell you what MPG you're getting, but simply gives you a hopelessly vague reading of + or - or somewhere in between?!?
But the worst part of this is that it takes the place of the engine temperature gauge on ALL Legacy models. Yes, including the 2.5GT turbo model.
Apparently a high-performance engine's fuel economy is more important than its operating temperature.
I just don't understand what Subaru's trying to do anymore.
The problem, though, is that I don't think Subaru understands what Subaru's trying to do anymore.

All cars have a fuel economy guage really. Higher the RPM's the more fuel consumed simple!! Agreed though I MUCH rather monitor the temperature then the fuel economy LOL! Although I think the temperature can be read with the onboard screen.

Heinous. Subaru sucks. Why does nobody make a good sized wagon that isn't overpriced "premium" car? They're either hatchbacks that are too small or tanks that evoke bad memories of fake-wood paneled American station wagons from the '70's. They blame it on American consumers not wanting wagons because of these old stereotypes, but how are we supposed to forget those old cars when all they build are modern versions of the same shit? Hell, I'd take a later Caprice wagon over this monstrosity.
Looks like I'll be keeping the 1990 until I die. Good thing they built it so well. All I want Subaru to do is add direct injection to an EJ series engine so I can retrofit it to mine at a later date.
Yeah, I may hate VW products, but that Audi is a damn good looking wagon and it's even a decent size. It costs the same to make an ugly or bland car as it does an attractive one, so I don't understand Subaru at all. The last generation Mazda 6 wagon was nice looking, maybe a touch larger than my ideal, but I didn't buy one because it was too friggin' heavy to get good gas mileage. New cars suck.

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

You know.....I've always preferred the Legacy over the Impreza.....with the new Impreza and the new Legacy, 2010.....I'd rather have the Impreza.

That S3 is damn sexy... but it's kind of like seeing that ridiculously hot chick at the bar... Her makeup is perfect, shes got on a nice tight skirt, maybe a tube top... But you know under the hood is a complete mechanical nightmare full of overcomplicated, over-engineered superfluous crap that will invariably break in 3 years. In 5 years she'll be an unreliable mess with little to no resale value, and will leave you stranded over and over again until you finally dump her on some poor unsuspecting college student, but only after she's milked you damn near dry.
That homely legacy, on the other hand... yeah, shes not the best looking gal in the world, but she'll cook your breakfast for the next 20 years and never complain.
That is, at least, if they still make either like they used too...
