The phase 2 crank needs to be machined to work with the thrust bearing at the center location. Others had success with similar setups.

If you don't machine the crank to accept that thrust bearing, I hear the stroked setups tend to crank walk. This is almost exactly what I am trying to do! since the EJ20H heads were TT, did you have to plug the oil inlet/outlet on the driver side cyl head??

I wonder what the stock ECU would do if you tried to fire this thing up lol

Update to the overall plans for my car.

I just had a baby last July, so basically all car time and funds have been suspended since then. I have also been working up in South Dakota and commuting from Colorado every few weeks for the last 4 years. Since I begun commuting, my Legacy has rusted through at an enormous rate. In South Dakota they use a large amount of concentrated salt on the roads all winter....it can be -20 degrees and the roads will be wet. So now I have rust on all parts of my sedan, even have big rust holes on the rocker panels.

I made a decision a few months ago that I will not be installing my new built engine in the rusted out shell. After doing comparisons on selected vehicle types (93-01 impreza RS, 93-01 impreza wagon, 97-99 Legacy GT and 92-94 Legacy SS) to continue my build, the 01 Impreza RS 4dr sedan was victorious. It was a tough decision between the Gen 1 Legacy and the Impreza. Basically the RS was selected because of the largely available modifications all around, quieter interior, 300ish lbs lighter and the ability to run a STi TMIC...I also preferred the styling....don't hate me for that.

I bought a 2001 Impreza RS 4dr 5mt in black pearl a month ago. I will be keeping the tleg as my commuter car and winter driver. The RS will now be the project car for the 2.35L stroker with a closed deck and oil squirters...still a tleg at heart.

I also just blew up 2nd gear on the Legacy, so I need to rebuild that prior to advancing my build. I still need to post up some pics of the pretty internals.

That sounds like a well thought out good plan. I too am doing something similar, without the monster stroker motor... yet.

I'm making my 2-door 95 impreza my fun, fast car, with all the readily available bolt-ons for that platform also with the heart of a turbo legacy. Then keeping my 91 t-leg as my daily all-year-round driver, with comfort and reliability in mind.

I will still be updating this build thread, with the Impreza instead, and at snails pace as always.

To start, I purchased the 2001 Impreza RS in the black pearl color about a month ago off of a member on RS25.com. I flew out to Oklahoma to get it and drove back to Colorado. The car had a ghetto fabulous hack job stereo and alarm system. Both HG were leaking oil, hood scoop was spray painted, it was littered with dings and scratches and had a cooked on 12 year old clear bra. None of this bothered me since I was able to get a 2001 4dr sedan with 5 speed and LSD and most importantly....NO RUST! I paid $5000, which is actually a pretty decent price.

Right away I was impressed on how well the Impreza handled compared to even the smallest Legacy. The shorter wheelbase and lighter chassis are distinctly noticeable. The 4.11FD really makes a big difference in acceleration. For a 2.5L n/a, the car really scoots...much quicker than my wife's 98 GT 2.5L with 3.9 FD.

The RS has a 5 speed manual transmission with 4.11 FD and a rear LSD. The only mods to the otherwise stock Impreza, were the STi front and rear seats, JDM tail lights and amber colored Ebay corner lights. I will be replacing the amber corners with JDM V6 clear corners. The JDM tail lights leak water like crazy and are in need of some 3M windo-weld tar...that stuff works great. I bolted on the larger OEM rear wing from a 2 door RS already painted in my color. I also threw on some JDM rear spats and a V6 front lip.
For n/a power, I ripped out the stock intake and bolted the K&N cone filter directly to the throttle body. I now have a fully functional hood scoop on a n/a Subaru.

I already installed HR coilovers along with a 20mm RSB I had laying around. I also "borrowed" the front strut brace from the wife's GT :-) .

Currently I am working on the brake system for the RS. This will consist of the 4/2 pot Subaru calipers with Kartboy brakets for the rears, SS brakelines, DBA rotors, Hawk Plus pads, MC brace and some Bremsflussigkeit.

I plan on building at least the shortblock this summer.

I need to save up for another standalone EM, probably the Haltech 1000. Realistically looking near January on the ECU.

I will take pics of the RS at some point and update the main sections of this thread.

Dominator...I was slightly sad demoting the Turbo Legacy to second in command. The uniqueness of the Turbo Legacy, especially the pre facelift, was the strongest factor playing against choosing the Impreza as the new project car.

In the end, the side by side comparison was a landslide for the RS in terms of functionality, performance and comfort.

I am still a strong believer that the ej22t motor was one of the best blocks ever built by Subaru. The oil squirters alone are a huge bonus. Extra cooling is never bad on forced induction applications.

So a few things are in the works. I have finally built the shortblock (ej22t case halves with oil squirters, 2.5L Phase 2 crank, eagle H-beam rods, ACL race bearings, custom spec'd CP forged pistons). Everything was in spec and rotates freely. I have started to install the ej20h DOHC heads with stock EJ22t HG....still need to install the cams and valve covers. All looks good so far. This motor will be going in my 2001 2.5RS sedan with a Haltech 1000 ECU. I am hoping to have it ready to swap in May. I have pictures from the shortblock build and head install, but they are not ready for posting yet....still in RAW format on the camera.

Second order of things, I am planning on swapping all my modifications from the SS to a TW. The SS has rust cancer and is losing the battle. The TW has no rust and gives me the flexibility of having a wagon and a sedan. I will be pre-facelifting the TW and eventually swapping over the 5mt. First I need to move over the injectors, turbo, suspension bits, interior stuff and wire in a Haltech 1000.

My good buddy is a photographer and is helping me document the build. I have pictures from the shortblock assembly, shot by the same friend. There should be some good photos in that set, and I'll get those up at some point in time. He is a busy guy as well, so it all depends on when he can get around to reformatting the RAW format of the photos and sending them to me.

Great write up! I have a spare 22T block and I am still figuring out what direction I will go with it.

What factored into your decision to grind the crank as opposed to machining the block? A lot of stroker builds I have come across machine the block and not the crank. Thanks.

Decision to machine the crank vs block came from the ease of machining. I talked with the machine shop and they stated that machining the block will be difficult....especially on the inner side of bearing location #5. The crank was trivial. It was still cast with the center thrush surface and I just had them machine it to 0.010" oversize bearings. I retained the #3 thrust location with ej22t specific bearings. I cannot stand by my design decision until the motor is running, broken in, and fully tuned to max power.

On a side note, I completely changed course on my DOHC head choice. Instead of the ej20h PnP'd DOHC heads, manifold and 960cc side feeds, I just dropped some pretty coin on ej205 DOHC heads, manifold, ID1000 top feed injectors and all required odds and ends.

This move will allow me to run a WRX engine wiring harness, all stock WRX PCV system lines, IAC on TB vs annoying big unit you have to custom plumb and top feeds vs side feeds. Also no modding to the STi TMIC necessary!

The ej205 stock cams have almost 2mm more lift then the ej20h cams (from my measurements) and I'm sure the heads flow better on phase 2 vs phase 1 DOHC.

I might be selling the complete phase 1 DOHC setup in the future.
