As long as there is not a short or something like that, you should be able to swap the illumination control units with each other to verify whether the problem is with it or something else.

Thank you very much Josh! I'm going to do this today.

Anyone have any ideas on where to get the instrument bulbs? I went to Advance Auto and they want $5 for two! I need the whole set. I wonder if I can get them cheaper from Subaru?

man I know this is old but I'm going to try.. by mistake I had two wires short together for the gauge cluster bulbs.. ok got some smoke because it was from one of the traces on the back.. Before you say oh no.. I bypassed the bad trace and I checked a few times and everything works, (tested in house) So.. I go in the car and just only the left side light sup fuel & speedo.. the tach and temp are both off, also I can't adjust the brightness on the whole dash.

It's possible the bulbs got burnt out or the flexible conducter on the back of the combination meter got fried.

in the end I fried the light control so I can't dim the lights with the stalk
