I've not had good experiences with those exact Bolt-Out sockets. I have tried to use them twice and both times the damaged bolt rounded off the teeth in the socket.

I'm glad they worked for you though.

Well that sucks! I was pretty damn impressed with them. What size bolt was it and was it a hardened steel bolt?

The first one that I tried it on was a stuck torque converter bolt on a '92 Touring Wagon. I ended up having to pull the engine with the TC still attached and grind the head off of the bolt. I used the correct size one on that and it rounded off the socket. I then pounded a smaller one onto the rounded off bolt and stripped it out too.

Interesting. I have a set just like these, but Irwin brand. I bought it specifically for a torque converter bolt job. Worked like a champ.

I also have a set of the craftsman ones, and the only one I used took a horribly mangled exhaust nut off like a champ.

Haha, I guess I am the odd duck out on these sockets. In the future I won't just dismiss them immediately, I might even buy another set. ;)

Depending on what you're interested in, some of the parts might be difficult to find since they were purchased a long time ago, but I'd be happy to help where I can.

Well this is more of a non-update update. I've got the remaining parts in, just haven't taken any pictures yet. The weather, my travelling for work, and now being sick has put a delay on moving forward with things. We'll see how I feel this weekend.

Well I am finally feeling better and had some time to work on things this weekend. I took pictures of the parts I got in and cleaned up and degreased the 6spd. I need to verify the shifter joint bushings I have will work with the 6spd joint, verify a few electrical issues, and then I'll be ready to pull the 5spd out of the Legacy.

Here are pictures from yesterday's work

mike tracy--my DCCD Pro uses a thumbwheel, same thing as what Josh has. Mine is a Subaru switch.

I have a plan in my head for the dial switch. If you took notice the potentiometer is a "push-lock" poti so when depressed the dial will be flush with the surrounding surface. Press the dial down, it pops up, you adjust it, and then press it back down flush.

I was looking at the possibility of using some of the newer Subaru DCCD switches, but they were all discrete switches and did not have an infinitely adjustable analog output. The older stokc Subaru switches are very long, so I would have had to mount them in the dash, below where the mirror controls were. I did not like that mounting area.

Once I get the guts mounted and everything figured out, I'll share my idea about the asthetics.

Yes it's a turbo 5spd trans (3.9 FD), 91 turbo I believe. I bought it off a friend in the Seattle area when I did my AWD & 5spd conversion. I don't recall the original mileage, I'd have to look and see if I can find that. I did have new syncros/balk rings installed before I installed it. It still is a little notchy shifting, but I think all these older transmissions are somewhat like that.

I am keeping the rear diff.

I do not have a specific timeline on when I'm going to get things done, so I don't have a timeline on when or if I'm going to sell it. Assuming I sell it, I'll let you know when it's available.

Thanks
Josh

Finally got some time and replaced the oil seals on the 6spd and installed the axle stubs. The work went pretty smoothly.

I also installed the TiC hardened poly bushings for the shifter joint. I may have pressed the bushings in too much because the metal pin sticks out and will not allow any movement when tightened down. I'm going to email TiC and see what they say.

Here are some pictures of parts and some test fitting from earlier in the month:

Here are pictures from yesterday with the bearing cap & shifter work:

http://www.main.experiencetherave.com/s ... spdswap/06

I did a little bit of a write up on the bearing cap / oil seal work if anyone is interested.

The trans is pretty much ready to go in. I'll probably try and take the 5spd out on Friday since I have off.

I started the tear down for the 6spd swap this afternoon. I drained the AWIC system and pulled the core as well as pulled the exhaust. I also drained the fluid from the 5spd and got a little surprise! There was an entire gear tooth stuck to the drain plug magnet! It's probably good I've been running around on wastegate boost for the past few months and that the 6spd is going in. I found a smaller chip of a tooth the last time I changed the fluid.

Unless someone really wants this trans, I will probably photo document tearing it apart.

Here's the tooth
