-I have the same issue. Off and on the lifters would tick loudly in the mornings then once the car warmed up the ticking would stop. Now its getting worse, ticking even after warm-up but not that dramatic as a cold start. Mine seem to be on the passenger side. Car has over 233,xxx miles. Wonder if I should consider a complete motor re-build. And I must say I'm not nice to my car, 15psi boost, td04, fcd, fmic, etc.

Yeah, mine tick regardless of temp. I'm thinking about just swapping my motor vs rebuilding it. But I might be in the market for a rebuild, I have a shop to do it at. And with taxes coming up, I could spare about 900 into doing the motor.

I have 213k and run a TD04 at 15psi with an FCD. So it definitely isn't babied at this point. The ticking seems to have no affect on performance and drivability.

I really would like to find the culprit. I have crossed out a few things at this point.

Do you think that it's possible for me to run some newer rockers that have adjustable rockers? That way I can eliminate the lifter tick with solid lifters?

I think the cam profile is going to be different so would not be compatible. Plus I'm not sure they made solid lifters for the 2.2 heads. You could try talking with Delta Cams and see what they say. But honestly, you're trying to solve a symptom and not the problem. It really sounds like you have reduced oil pressure and that is causing your issues with the lifters. You need to verify what your oil pressure is and then go from there.

I'm thinking about throwing some
EJ25D heads on. If I'm gonna pull the motor out anyways, why not. That way I could do OEM rebuild on the block. And it would be cheaper than buying an EJ20G, because I still wanna keep the heart of the closed deck 2.2. So many options..

96-98 ej22s use a solid lifter/roller rocker assembly, you could easily swap the cams and rockers out and get away from the hla style. The newer ones have manual adjustment screws for valve clearance.

Today I ordered 1qt of Kreen for $15, so this next week we shall see how well it performs. I have read like 5 reviews of people having unfixable lifter tick and after 5mins the tick was gone. So we'll see, i'm at my last resort here. I also ordered the Oil Pressure Sender Kit from Prosport for $40 so I can mount up my sender, they make a kit with an oil galley adapter plug, braided steel line and a mounting cup to mount my sender on the strut tower, rather than try and fit the sender directly on the block. This way I can finally see what my oil pressure is at, and if it's possibly low.

That Kreen looks like some good stuff. Let me know how it turns out cuz I think I might use some in mine.

The lifter tick is GONE. It fixed itself on it's own!

No clue how, I was driving home and when I pulled into my neighborhood I turned the music down and boom, the engine was all quiet. Drove it around some more and it was good. That was two days ago, and it's still quiet. I'm sooo so so happy. The Kreen is still on it's way, so I might add some and see what results I find. I do have ATF in my oil, so that may have helped to clean out some things.

I would let the ATF in there a little longer and then drain & refill with fresh oil. I'm not sure I'd put the kreen in there unless you have more problems.

Josh, I agree with ya. I'm gonna run it for a about another 1000 miles. And I'm not gonna use Kreen.

Joe, I drained some oil and added 1qt ATF.

ATF is basically 5-30w oil with detergents in it. It's not gonna hurt the engine with only 1qt, assuming you have a fairly stock EJ22T (TD04, stock internals). I'm gonna run it for another 1000 miles or so. Already put 1000 miles on it. I'm not being nice to the motor I've been pushing it kinda hard just to try and get all the crud out of the engine.

You can even put the ATF in the gas tank to clean/lube the fuel system.

Does it matter if its Dexron, Chrysler ATF, Type-F, etc?

I've tried them all over the last 25years, I don't think it matters. They all seem to do the same thing.

I'd be cautious how much you put in the gas tank since too much may cause fouling on the catalytic converter and could prematurely wear or damage the O2 sensor.

Just ask an FC RX-7 owner about mixing oil and gas, im sure theyll kniw specific ratios offhand
