Don't know about that . But my trans shifts great

And ppg says that they only use shock proof

Anyone know the scoop on the new Subaru Certified 75W-90 gear oil vs the Extra S? I've read conflicting info on whether its the Extra-S or not.

Any links to the "new" subie gear oil? I haven't heard about it.

Same link you posted earlier. By the time I actually placed my order the image changed from Fred Beans' own quart bottles to the Subaru Certified 75W-90 Gear Oil bottles. Still advertised as Extra-S, but the bottle itself makes no mention of extra-S or even being synthetic. Being offered by Subaru I trust its at least as good as the better OTS gear oils though.

I found a post by a NASIOC member who says its not the same stuff... take that for what its worth.

Josh, were you able to find any new info about the change in fluid? Same thing as Extra-S, or something else?

Well, got my trans full of the Subaru Certified 75W-90. So far I've noticed no difference from Amsoil Severe Gear. Still notchy as hell into first and reverse. Regular shifts are no smoother. Needed to be changed anyway, so certainly not a waste. And price is comparable to the Amsoil. But its no magic liquid like everyone says about ExtraS.

I just drained the factory Extra-S from my wife's 2014 WRX and put in Amsoil Severe Gear 75w-90, and I didn't really notice much of a difference. It actually is a TINY bit smoother, but I think that's mostly because it was still running on original fluid. It has about 4100 miles on it, which is very low - BUT this is a brand new tranny and much to break in, and I noticed a decent amount of metal flake in there when draining the original. It's to be expected though, brand new gears gotta wear into each other during break in and there is always going to be some stuff left in the oil. Same thing happened on my built Honda tranny after adding in the LSD and synchros. I'm really glad I decided on changing the fluid early, I didn't want all that flake floating around in there for the next 26k miles.

That said, it really seems that the Amsoil is comparable to the Extra-S, in light of my and James' recent experience, at least in terms of shifter feel - assuming that the fluid James ordered is the same as Extra-S.... Again, assuming Amsoil's testing methods are sound and not skewed, I'd bet that it would last even longer.

I've never tried Subaru Extra-S or any Amsoil products.

It's the same stuff. This is from a Subaru parts bulletin

“The part number K0322AA093 (20 liter container of gear oil) is no longer available from SOA. The new quart bottle is available from a third party supplier as a drop shipment. Please use quart bottle part number SOA427V1700 as the replacement.”

From what I've read around the web, it seems like Subaru owners are generally happy with both Severe Gear and Subaru gear oil. Most other brands seem to have mixed reviews.

Not sure if I should post a new topic about gear oil-my issue is finding gear oil that will let me shift when the weather is dam cold! read-polar vortex. I don't want a remote starter-I just want to get in my car and GO!

My idea of warming up is about a minute-and it still needs to get moving before it will shift without forcing it into gear-should I switch to synthetic? I'm getting my 120k service done in two weeks.

What are you currently running?

The tranny oil will not warm up until you drive it. The thing to do is drive gently until warmed up and oil takes alot longer to get warm than the coolant.

I'm currently running severe gear and light weight shock proof and mine shifts good at -40 with out warm up. Other oils would be too thick at that temperature and wouldn't shift it in second.

Who makes it? I'm just running conventional 75w90

Amsoil makes severe gear and Red Line makes the lightweight shock proof, I run a 50/50 mix and have around 100k on the oil that is currently in it. Personally, I've tried most all types of oils but I like this mix for the syncros and the bearings.

The new Subaru High Performance Gear Oil (HPGO) is NOT the same as the now-discontinued Subaru Extra S Gear Oil (ESGO).

A NASIOC member has sent 2 virgin oil samples for analysis because many people had a hunch that the gear oils were not the same. Subaru lists HPGO as an alternative for ESGO, never says they are the same thing.

I work for Subaru and was unhappy to find that the 20L Pail of ESGO is NLA from Subaru and you must buy the Quart bottles of HPGO now.

I've used ESGO in all of my Subaru MTs with great success, next time I change my gear oil i will use HPGO to see how it goes.
