looking for some input: got my motor completely torn down, all 4 rod bearings were toast, one a little more.
what I believe the cause was:
On used shortblock assembly install, the bov hose had become jammed in the throttle @ wot. initial startup was bouncing off the rev limiter until I could shut it off. so I'm thinking dry bearings were damaged. started out a little knocky like piston slap, just on startup, and continually got worse until it was apparent when flaringing the throttle. silent at idle when warm, and silent under load. any other potential causes? swapped an sti oil pump at shortblock install. I will be replacing it with a new one again. mains looked perfect, which leads me to believe it was not an oil delivery problem. or it could have been the old oil pump on the used engine prior to me getting it, I hate mysteries .....

I recommend you do some reading on adding a higher volume oil pump when it's not needed. There are several threads/posts on here and on NASIOC about adding the 11 or 12 mm oil pump to motors that don't have AVCS. The added flow of the pump can cause it to run in bypass and cause frothing and oil starvation. I highly recommend running the oil pump meant for the original motor, unless you have altered something that increases oil flow demand like AVCS.

the oe subaru pump for the 2.2t engine supercedes to the sti/wrx oil pump, even if I order the old part number. So i'm not sure what else I can do , I read somewhere that maybe it can be shimmed? stock everything else, and it had a brand new sti oil pump at install, im putting another new one on as well. I still have the 2.2t original pump, but I fear installing used and unknown parts on a freshened engine

The 02-05 WRX and 04-07 single AVCS STI use a 10mm pump like our SS. So that's what you should get. Later STI's and other cars used larger pumps.

Subaru Part # 15010AA108 supersedes to 15010AA300

Here's a link to more discussion about oil pumps:
