I actually haven't had much work done on my car up there. I've done most of it myself.

Jason would be a good source of info :)

work done

Post by tris91ricer »

Thanks, appreciate the offer.. you work at griots? fun shop.. good times..
i still can't get the warning lights to turn off now. as long as i'm idling or accelerating, the 'brake', 'stop lamp' and battery light flash in my gauge pod. (which is still dark, by the way.) Do i have to reset my ECU? i still notice the hesitation, but i've been feeling it, and watching my stereo for dimness when the bass hits.
so i'm debating on whether the battery is dead and wont hold much of a charge so i'll have to buy a new one, or whether i just need to reset the ECU. (yes josh, i have the link, thanks.) in other words, it still thinks there's something wrong with the charging system.
anyone have any suggestions?
i had a lot of confidence in my car until the alt went, and now i just don't feel as safe as i did in it.. and it doesn't run the same, either.
nonetheless, i'm still going to have my new muffler put on (V-power Power1), then i'll whine about what else needs to be done...
heheh.

thanks,

Your battery is either on it's way out, or the alternator wasn't rebuilt properly....or it could just be dead....

Usually if your alternator goes out....you're battery will follow right behind because it was drained down.

I was thinking of having my alternator overhauled and rewound to produce more current, since I've got a fairly big current draw with the stereo, and I might be putting high wattage headlights in, and I often use the fog lights, and I might be mounting a computer in the car, and in the winter I spend a lot of time with the rear defogger on, and .... so forth.

Is it possible/practical to rewind an alternator yourself?

Legacy777 wrote:Well I got a HO alternator coming, so hopefully it will improve things. I want to do the grounding mods and such too.

I move in two weeks, at that point I'll have a garage, so I can do all the work that I've been putting off.
Where do you get this "HO" alternator? Most parts places sell OEM alternators with standard output.

alternator

It's not the "alternator" or it's output capacity that's the problem. It's the regulator circuit that controls the field current fed back to the rotor via the brushes. If your alternator isn't making 13.8+ volts at 2000 rpm then you should be wondering about what's up.

A bad battery can also drag you down a bit - but you'll uaually notice a bad battery when your car won't start.....

Check the voltage at the aternator stud and at the battery. If there is significant difference then you have some bad contacts.

You'd have to be running ALOT of power to justify a higher output alternator. Clamp on a current meter and measure the current when your stereo is kicking it - you'll be suprised.

Measure it with a zillion watts of rally lights and you'll also be suprised - the other suprised :)
