is there anyway to control timing? Other than a standalone ECU?

Not really, unless you want to tinker with some of the sensors that affect the timing...not recommended.

boost-timing controller. MSD makes one......there are add-on options.....but they do cost money

If all you need is boost-dependent ignition retard, that's built into a lot of aftermarket ignition boosters and knock sensors kits. These can cost less than timing controllers.

a lot of us over here have put one way valves in place of the bleed valve so it runs the standard fuel map up to manifold pressure then it begins to run really rich it eliminates fuel cut and you can run a little bit higher boost for a little bit longer, fuel economy goes out the window however.
