Looking good, CJ. That SRS hump is one of the things I can't stand about my car.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
Ok so I picked up an SS ecu from a board member. When I looked at the ad I misread it and thought all the top pins were cut, but they weren't so I'm a little bit happier.
I bought the broken ecu for 15 bucks so I could have the female plug. I need (want) the female plug so i can solder up my Stinger EMS standalone up to it and make my standalone plug and play.
Since i only had to five pins on the broken ecu, I'm going to put that ecu in my car and see if it fixes my IAC, low rpm timing/fuel, and idle problems.

Also, Is this chip normal? I don't remember the last time I opened a turbo legacy ecu, i just don't now if i recall this.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
The add-in chip is very uncommon. I have heard reports of one existing but never seen one in pictures or in person.
It would be exciting to dump a ROM image with the chip and without the chip and see what the differences are. It might help me identify what some sections of the code do since I only have a disassembled stock ROM at the moment and it's difficult finding out what all the different sections of code do.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
When you are done testing with that ECU CJ, I would love to get my hands on it and dump the code. Is that possible?
If not, I can get you the software to dump the ECU memory to a file but you will need a laptop and power supply capable of running for about an hour. And an SSM cable to connect to the ECU in the car.
The label that says MECF-RM51 is the ROM version label. What does the one on the side of the ECU say?

The label on the side of the ecu says MECF-M51. If this ECU solves some problems, it'd probably be easier to just send me over the software. I don't have an SSM cable anymore. I have a laptop as well, and several outlets in my garage. Power wont be an issue. Definately willin to help out.

You need a 12v DC power supply to power up the ECU as well.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
Well i just tried swappin out the ecus, after i put the rom chipped ecu in, the car wouldn't start at all. gonna put the original ecu back in right now.
Original ecu back in, and car starts. Must be something different about that rom or it's a dead ecu.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
Hmm, probably a dead ECU. I can't see any reason why the chipped ECU would do that due to ROM differences. Any turbo Legacy ECU should be able to run any other turbo Legacy. Are you interested in loaning it to me for a short while so I can see if I can dump the code and maybe get it working again?
Another thing you could try (probably won't help) is to pop the ECU chip off of it and run it with only the onboard ECU chip.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
Well i guess i could have done that as well, i also thought about swapping the rom board to my ecu but did neither. Didnt want to risk blowing up my only good ecu. it'll be atleast a couple of weeks before i could send you the ecu. Do you need the whole thing or can i just send you the rom board? My original plan was to hack the plug off the ecu and make my Stinger EMS plug & play.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
Just the chip would be fine. My thinking is that maybe early ECUs had a chip applied by the dealer at times and later ECUs might have the same code that is on the chip. So that chip might have the same version of code as my '94 ECU has built in. But maybe not. Only way to see would be to dump the chip, which I can do if I have it.
The other possibility is that it might have been a later fix after production, in which case it would be different than my code on my ECU. Of course, it would be most helpful if the code is different but it would be cool to find out either way.
Maybe I could stop by this Friday, I will be in the area passing through and could spare a few minutes to swing by and grab the chip. Let me know.

Where do you wire those things up? I have a turboxs FCD that robert wants me to install in his car but it says to splice into the MAP sensor wire inside the cabin where the FCD will go since it's adjustable on the fly and I don't know what wire to solder it to.

Re: CJ's 92 SS build... Running Strong!
In the electrical sicky compilation thread look at the ecu pinout. You splice into +5v +12v cut the map sensor signal, and ground to shell. You have to pay attention to that sognal wire tho, there are gonna be 2 wireson the fcd for the signal wire. One will be to ecu and one will be from the sensor

You do not want to use solder for your wire connection joints. I know you see and hear people doing it all the time, but you don't want to. You will never find Subaru or other auto manufacturers using a solder joint to connect wire. They use a mechanical crimping device of some sort with heat shrink or some kind of cover over it.
The mechanical connection will stand up to vibration and all the stuff you see in a car better than solder joints. I usually will strip the plastic off the round connectors, splice the wiring together and then put heat shrink over that. The joint connection is smaller than if I just left the hard plastic on.
