That is a very good write up! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to add that to the sticky thread in the Body/Chassis forum.

Surprisingly no!, I was shocked to see all that water/crap in there. I did at one point wash the engine bay, which took out my TPS sensor the first time....Image but that was a while ago

New thermostat all ready to go, I take the housing off and....WTF!?!?
Image
Image
Image
I think I see the problem....

cleaned/painted the housing and bolted it down
Image

Well I got myself that speed cable adapter for the trans and got that hooked up to the speedo, so that works.
Image
Image
This was a bitch to get the other end back in the gauge cluster
Didn't have time to mess with the TPS and check t just yet so I just pulled the check engine bulb and put some tape over the abs light for now until I can fix it, passed inspection so thats all done. Now I can really work out all the kinks and get this thing to proper DD status. :D
Image
some 91 octane, tempted to put in 93 but nahhh...besides hat shit cost more than gold..

it sure is looking the part though.

Definitely looks like the wrong thermostat and I'm assuming that's your rag and not one you found in the thermostat housing?

nope I found it pinched inside the valve of the tstat itself, not sure how exactly that got in there....but it was...and assuredly fuking up my cooling system royally.

I did get my keys handed back to me from the AAMCO guy who had all of 4 teeth and managed to break my speedometer sensor, my radiator and re-used and old shitty transmission pan gasket that costs what? $3?? So my guys would be that mope when he filled it back up with coolant...Because I am pretty sure Mark doesn't use those red shop rags. Lol my fault for not checking before I swapped the motor in.

I'm baffled how someone could pull that off? That'll do it. I'm surprised your car didn't overheat worse!

Me too, I was really surprised to see that, oh yeah FYI this one did have a jiggle pin in the tstat I removed, but the spring was WAY smaller than the OEM one. It is unconfirmed if the gates one works, because of the obvious ridiculous obstruction lol, if anything it supports that it might be a good tstat to use.

Next up on the to do list: -Master Bushing Kit (to eliminate/narrow down clunking noises,+ they are like 20 years old now)
-STi rear trailing arms and lateral links
Image
-STi rear lateral links
Image
-Front inner/outer tie rods
-Steering rack bushings (if not included in the master set)

Which bushing kits fit the Sport Sedan? Is there a kit that will fit? like the early imprezas or later legacies?? Or am I going to have to piece together from this and that? This clunking is driving me nuts.

Wow! That's about all I can say about the rag....wow!

If you can find a bushing kit for the GC impreza, it should fit the turbo Legacy. When you start getting into the GD Impreza, not everything will fit.

I will recommend NOT doing the metal collared bushings that are in the front trailing links and A-arms. They are a huge bitch! Go with split poly bushings if you can, it'll make your life A LOT easier. Pressing STi hardened bushings in is ridiculous!

The one in the car or the spare I gave you?
And no, I would never do that. Everyone here knows how I am with my cars.

it was out of the spare, I know I didn't leave it in there, the only guy that I can think of was the AAMCO guy, I don't let shops work on my cars for this exact reason, the shop refuse to pay for anything they broke and were like loan sharks trying to get more than the orig payments we agreed on....fuck AAMCO, worst place I have ever been to.

I am going to use all poly bushings, and just swap in entire arms where I can, the less work the better, and pressing in bushings is not my cup o' tea

Interesting day today, I decided to put my car up on the lift to check the AWD, so I hoist it up and start it, put it into D and sure enough the rear wheels are not moving, so I give it a little throttle blip and with a click clack they start moving and I am getting a rotational click clack noise. The driveshaft was apparently rubbing against the little protector towards the rear end. I didn't get a great look at it as my time kind of ran out, but my guess is the bushing is worn out and causing it to sink a bit and contact the the housing.

Thing is once the weight is loaded from a stop up until about 3 I am getting a really loud whine/squeal, after the car gets past 30ish it goes away, there is also a pulsing around 45mph, like the driveshaft isn't spinning true (probably due to worn bearing) But if I go WOT from a stop you hear nothing....so looks like I need either a new bushing, or if it isn't serviceable, a whole new driveshaft.

Are the AT shafts same as the manual, and if not, can I use an NA legacy shaft?

No, the AT & MT driveshafts are different lengths. If you have the one that bolts together, the front part of the drive shaft is the only part that is a different length. So the rear section should be interchangable.

Does anyone have a part number for the carrier bearing? I can get it from a local driveshaft shop for $174, but I would rather get it for like $20 which is what it SHOULD cost!!

The carrier bearing Subaru part # is 27037AA000. But I'm not sure that will do you much good.

thanks for the effort but the dealer wants nearly $200 for it lol, I KNOW they make aftermarket bearings for this, does anyone have any idea of the size specs for it? I have also heard the nissan D21 bearing will fit but I can' confirm it anywhere. If anyone has a part number I would appreciate it lol.

fixed  , also I called AAMCO to bitch them out, apparently the toothless wonder was fired because of complaints like this lol. So I made them fix the problem out of principle, once they had it on the lift I noticed it was actually missing the bushing that holds the bracket up to the trans tunnel lol, this guy was a complete fool, broke everything he touched and forgets to button everything up. I am just glad the actual transmission wasn't rebuilt at that shop, they sent it to another shop to do the pump etc...

anyway while I was under there I noticed my steering rack and sway bar bushings are all oil soaked and basically ruined, once I get these fluid leaks under control i'll be getting all new bushings.
