I would suggest starting the engine, however it should connect to the ECU with the key in the ON position.
Try a previous version of the software and see if that works. I seem to recall the latest version not working on some ECU's.

At the bottom of this page you'll see Version history:

Click on one of the previous versions. Try the most recent one after the current release.

Sorry about the missing file... I don't know how I missed that when pulling the stuff from my old backups.
In any case, I've restored it and also posted a new version! Apparently it's been almost 6 years since the last version; wow. And again, all the source code is freely available so if you want to try and improve on it you can.
I've incorporated the fixes scuzzy helped figure out so the new version 0.07 should work as reliably as 0.05 did. I've also added support for reading trouble codes and clearing memory.
Clearing memory could be especially useful for people who are having trouble clearing codes using the read/test mode connectors method, since this forces them to clear. It also resets all the ECU's learned fuel trims and timing adjustments.
It's been tested booting off a USB flash drive now. That should make it a little easier since you don't need moving parts on the boot device anymore.
Keep in mind that even if you boot from USB, you still need a real parallel or serial port (not a USB-to-whatever converter).
I don't have a Legacy anymore, so it's up to you guys to test it out and tell me if it works.

Thanks, Soul Shinobi.
So... is anyone actually still using this tool at all? I'd really like to know if the new version and new features work correctly...

i can tell you with certainty that there are many of us who use the EJ22 as a transplant engine who are still using the B10. for those of us in california, the EJ22 is the only california smog-legal transplant into the volkswagen vanagons and westfalias. until recently there weren't any other tools with reliable OBD-I/SSM support, so there is still a number of people using the B10...and a market for old laptops with parallel ports!
that said, i forwarded your announcement to our group but haven't heard feedback yet, and haven't had the opportunity to test it myself either, will post back when i do. and thanks again for creating the B10 tool, for years we relied on it to make diagnosing our EJ22's possible.

Thanks, iiigoiii, it's good to know it's helping people out. Please do let me know when there's feedback (and maybe direct folks this way if they have questions or comments).

Anyone tried any of these versions on a rob tuned ecu? Will it only read the US ecus? I'm assuming so, but figured I'd ask to see if this has been successful on an Australian or UK ecu?

Not sure, but I've got a cable for this that I'd be willing to part with.

Time to refresh this great Thread!
I was infected to built a EJ22 in my Vanagon three Jears ago.
The Implant is successfully an i think about a second Projekt.
I would take the next Parts from a Legacy Model Year 1995 EJ22 with 128HP.
To diag the Engine before implant, i want to show the Parameters, Switches and Trouble Codes with B10.
B10 shows the ROM ID. But can´t select Data on Screen with the Buttons on the Keyboard.
It shows 74.32.a1 MT.
Is it possible to get a Upgrade for B10 on my ECU?
Best Regards from Germany, Tom

Welcome to the BBS.
Sounds like a nice project you have going.
Do you know what year the ECU came from? What is the part number on the ECU housing?

Thanks, nice to be here.
The Model Year is 1995. I am not sure, but it should be a three PIN ECU.
ROM ID is 7432a1.
For the Part Number, i must look tomorrow....an post it.
Maybe with a Picture.
Thank you so much!
Thomas

Hi Tom,
If it's a 3-pin plug ECU, the chances are that it's going to be a different generation of ECU than the ones found in the 1990-1994 Legacies (which use a 4-pin ECU plug).
I emailed Vikash, the creator of the tool to see if he has any feedback and whether he thinks the 95 ECU might work with his tool.

Hi Josh,
i have new Input
Today, i put my Head under the Cockpit and there was no ECU like the Model 90-94.
I found it at the Passenger Side about a half Hour...
Actually, the ECU have three Pins!
Here are the Pictures from the ECU, the Diagnostic Connector and the Plate with Car Data.
I hope, the Picture Links are on Funktion.
Here are some Informations for tihs ECU. I found it in the Net..

Tom,
Thanks for the info and pictures.
Do you know if your Legacy has an OBD2 port/plug? If it does, my recommendation would be to use a standard OBD2 reader and software program to connect to the ECU.
If your Legacy is not OBD2 compliant then Vikash will have to look at the info you posted and determine whether he can modify his program to work with your ECU.

Hi Josh, how are you?
The ECU from this Model doesn´t fit OBD II.
There are only SM Ports like the older Models.
I have checked it with a Wiring Diagram on our T3-Subaru Forum, too.
This Compliant exists on Models 1996 or newer in Europe.
Now i have the knowledge, my Legacy is only one Jear to old for OBD II
About five Days ago, i read the completely Thread about B10 Scantool.
I am very pleased about this History. A great Compliment apply to you and Vikash!
This Tool is the one and only that works without Problems for Parameters, Switches
AND Trouble Codes on older Legacy Models. There are many other Tools, but without that extensive Funktions.
In this Thread, i have seen, Vikash does not have much Time to play with.
I would not steel him this precious Time.
When he updated the software, that would be nice
But it is not a problem if that is not possible!
I can exist with it.... it´s a Hobby
Today, i have spoken with a Computer Scientist. He is a high qualified Doctor.
I asked him "is it´s possible, to run B10 with USB FTDI Converter Cable on Windohw 7".
He said "that is not impossible, but i must see".
What do you think about it?
So long and best Wishes
Thomas

Hi Tom,
The 1995 model year in the US is similar and didn't get the OBD2 standard until 1996.
I guess we'll see if Vikash replies or not.
Another option if you can find one is a Subaru select monitor. This will plug into the diagnostic port and with the correct cartridge you can read the parameters from the ECU, just like the B10 scan tool. I picked up and older one on ebay several years back.
As for the USB converter, I'm not sure if that will work. I seem to recall Vikash saying that the converters would work as long as the computer boots into a dos environment. But I could be wrong. Maybe someone that has used the program and possibly a converter can chime in.

Hi Josh,
today, i am played with B10 to emulate it for Win7.
That is the Result. The Buttons on the Keyboard are all on Funktion.
It´s no Fake. It´s only a Prototype.
The Evoscan and FTDI Cables should be virtual COM Interfaces.
I think, there should be a Way to run it.
But that´s the Part for my Friend.
Best Regards, Thomas

I haven't been able to make Evoscan work properly, so now I'm taking a look at B10. I dug out my old computer and it only has 15 vga connector. ( link below) I found an adapter that turns a the 15 vga connector to DB9 Female ( link below) I'm wondering if anyone know if this will work?

Sorry, that´s not the right Reply...
do you know Subi Gauges ?

Based on B10 Sourcecode, more ECU´s, Freeware and works with TTL 5V Cable on USB

Here is a graphical version of the select scan software. I think I tried it years ago:
http://www.vwrx.com/index.php?pg=selectmonitor
The last time I looked into connecting my computer, I used something called revscan software. It was made by revtronix. If you search this site, it may still be hosted somewhere.
