Well, the whole point of going USB is to avoid having to purchase a USB to serial adapter. While useful, most people don't have one. Most people do have USB.

I don't know about serial to USB adapters, though.

Anyway. I still believe USB would result in the best-case scenario and maximum user friendliness. RS232 can be cumbersome to manipulate for the common user, whereas USB is true plug and play (or plug and pray, in some cases)

No, there isn't an adaptor to let you use USB devices on a computer with only RS232. You can only go the other way. Hence my preference.

Vikash, thats true that RS232 would result in the most compatable product... although I don't really have any DOS compilers, so I kinda have to make a Windows program. I will make the interface relatively simple though so you can write a DOS interface if you'd like.

Although, I suppose if you have a good DOS C compiler and IDE that I could use, perhaps I could write the interface in DOS instead.

OK, you've convinced me to stick with RS232 for this product.

I was thinking of some kind of UNIX, actually... I don't normally run Windows or DOS on any of my computers.

DJGPP is a good free compiler and IDE for DOS, though. It's a based on a port of gcc.

But you should just use whatever you're comfortable with. Don't bother learning a whole new programming environment just because of me. Just give me enough information so that I can write my own interface software if/when I need it.

i hate dos and have never used to any profeciency anything other than windows. so windows based sounds great.

as for that rs232, thats what utec uses and most ppl using that just keep it or have a usb adapter

I could live with RS232, and Windows would be awesome (I suck at DOS).

I was planning on running mine on my school laptop once I get it, so USB would be fine, too.

Holy CRAP! i've just read the whole post!!

Count me in for the whole legaCU unit. Here's what i understood.

When it's going to be ready, the legaCU will be plug and play, with legacEBC integrated into it.

I would need FCD to be also integrated.

But will i still need to buy the EVO 8 harness extension for it to be plug and play. And the wideband o2 sensor, is it mandatory, will it be included it the whole kit.

It's been so freakin' tough to find the time to work on this project! I've been testing the same old version in my car and know exactly what I want to tweak for the next test... and what happens? Of course, it's time to move to the new office in Kissimmee. This was supposed to happen a few months down the road but hey life's crazy sometimes.

Anyway, another week or so and we should be all set back up. I should be able to work on the LegacEBC again then.

And I'm saving up for a VF36 twin-scroll/ball-bearing setup... so the LegaCU should not be far off, as it's services shall be required.

Did I mention, the LegacEBC will improve any turbo's spool characteristics over straight wastegate control by at least 50%? I've even got it spooling faster than when my ball-and-spring MBC was connected. Can't wait to see what this feature does to a twin-scroll turbo

By holding the boost solenoid at absolute full-open leak (back into the turbo inlet) until the desired boost level is reached, the turbo effectively helps spool itself on the compressor side much like what normally occurs on the turbine side - the already-compressed air provides additional force to spin the compressor wheel as it passes back through. I've got boost at 1.5k RPM with my VJ17 hybrid!

Edit: FCD is simple enough to just implement the entire circuit, as Vikash laid it out, onto the PCB - I suppose this would be a natural addition. I could have the PSoC simulate a FCD'd MAP sensor's output with a DAC pretty easily, too. Hmm.

Edit 2: Any ideas what a good name for this super-spoolup feature should be called, or referred to as? Something catchy, like Sars. Although, not Sars. That name is taken.

I don't think the amount of air flowing through a 4mm hose is actually helping the turbo spool... You're just making sure that the wastegate actuator doesn't see any meaningful pressure, which helps keep the wastegate closed.

That's impressive that it's faster than a ball-and-spring MBC.

Actually, it's the blowoff valve that's helping to equalize pressure on both sides of the compressor. That thing's got 19mm hoses.

As for keeping pressure away from the wastegate until you get close to the desired boost pressure, I'm not sure you can claim to have invented it (as I remember, Gus McMahon actually did a writeup on how to add that functionality to the stock boost control on his mini-Mopar). You can still name it though.
