Revtronix chip (no longer avl.) w/440's and TD04 on STOCK EJ22T= 180hp/240 ft-lbs. @ the wheels. This was @ 16.5 psi.

Legacy777 was making ~250 @ the wheels (can't recall if that was HP and/or Torque) w/his LINK (standalone ECU) setup w/the 550/TD05 installed on the stock EJ22T block/heads.

With a Rob Tune, VF39/TD05, and 550's (and other required mods) the stock EJ22T should be in the 225- 250 WHP or 225- 250 ft-lbs.....which is likely pushing the limits of the stock pistons anyway.

Personally, I'd love to know what sort of experience people have had with the stock 22T long block and 550's/VF39 or similar setup (Robtune or otherwise).

When I upgraded to TD05-16G (still on Rev chip) the car was laggy, but livable....I had this on the 4EAT/auto trans. With a 5-speed it should be better.

The STi's VF39/43/48 is a good compromise between TD04 and TD05-16G, IMHO.


The stock SOHC heads are tuned more for torque and should make more torque than HP, when compared to the DOHC, which tend to make more equal HP/Torque numbers, depending on the tune.

Just to give an idea of what to expect.

Thanks for the clarification there. I know I had read about at least one member running the stock heads with the RobTune setup and has had good results.

TD, thanks for summarizing your experiences there. I just really like where the power band is with the TD04, basically between 3000 and 5500 which is great for daily driving. I don't know how fast the 39/43 would spool with the 2.2 and stock heads, which is my only hesitation.

With Rob's launch control (LC) option you should be good to go (but your clutch???? not so much).

I'd guess your old VF8 would be similar to the VF39/TD05, but have no experience w/it.

Yep, order all the Rob Tune stuff from Rob: Chipped ECU and 4-2 converter.

You will not regret it.....well, your tranny might, but that's part of the deal.

I'll be installing a new clutch too, stoked to be ordering new parts. Just wasn't expecting to be upgrading after only 4.5 days of driving

Well, I wasn't sure if I should ask this question in this thread or start another one, but here goes...

A guy asked me a question that I didn't have a definitive answer to. I tried searching with no results. So, does anyone have input on this: Does the Rob tune give better gas mileage than stock mpg if one drives conservatively? Does anyone have mpg comparative numbers they can share?

I get mid 20s mixed driving. Highway is really good, probably 30. Heavy foot town driving is less than 20. About like stock I figure.

As far as drivability goes, on my 60miles/day mostly highway commute I typically log about 25-27mpg. I have seen as high as 30mpg on long trips.

(This is for his EJ20G-swapped Impreza.)

This is as good as some Cobb tunes I've seen on WRX's...30 on the highway is awesome!

Thanks for that link, Td. And, yes, I was looking specifically for the ej22t Legacy mileage but as Scotty's figures show, they are similar. It's good to know that! Rob does a good job with his chip and tune!

Rob Tune impression and MPG update:

-I've had the Rob Tune EJ20G ECU running now for about 3 months. I have the '550' version(525cc injectors)/VF24/TMIC/3"DP, MBC set to 19psi.

-Car runs well and have no issues other than infamous cold-start problem - common to many EJ20G-equipped cars. I usually just hit the key for a second and turn it off b4 it actually starts. Then on the 2nd key turn it'll fire up normally.

There are multiple posts on NASIOC and elsewhere about what people have tried to fix the issue. Some have had success w/cleaning the IAC. Others - including Rob - have replaced the Cam and Crank sensors which fixed it (but those are $$$). I've yet to try any of the above as it's not a big deal, and my other 'Rob tuned' car did the same thing.

-I hope to get over to Seatle-area for a Dyno run b4 winter settles in (I run studded snow tires, which don't work on the rollers). I really want to see what #'s I'm putting down.

MPG:

I took a 150 mile RT cruise and got 28.5 MPG *. I wanted to see what I could get, after reading about others getting 30 MPG. I'm close enough to agree it'll do it. This was a 'stay of out boost as much as possible' but not trying to 'hypermile it ' drive. My avg. speed was 60 mph. It was a mostly flat trip w/only a couple small hills requiring some boost, but I never had to shift out of 5th, and I passed 2 cars, which required getting into boost.

*EDIT: I forgot to 'correct' for my 225/50R-16 tires, which means I actually got over 29 MPG.


Just a pic of the odometer and fuel gauge. On the stock setup, I was just below 1/2 a tank @ 150 miles. Now it's just over 1/3 used @ 150 miles.

EDIT - 12/9/13: On my trip to Seattle I set the cruise @ 75 (GPS-verified), and including one long 10 mile climb (Rygrass Summit on I-90), I avg. 23MPG. On the way back I got the same 23 MPG (which included the 2 pulls on the dyno) when I filled up @ the same pump. Roughly 210 miles each time.


Summary:
I'm happy w/the performance boost and the added benefit of better MPG. It's easily the best option for making more power - safely and reliably.

28.5mpg! Damn. I get 23 average. I hit 24.9 once and that was amazing for me. Stupid 4.444 kills my gas milage.

Thanks for the review wtdash. Damn, I need to stop being a slacker and do this upgrade. I've got all the parts, just not the time. I'm looking forward to the MPG upgrade. I did not know of that before. I'm only getting 18-19mpg right now.

I've got the same issue in regards to your studded tires on the Dyno dilemma. Alaska just got it's first AWD dyno in Anchorage this past year. I have been wanting to get a base line pull and then an after upgrade pull to see the ROB Tune improvements. Summers are too busy for me to make the 400 mile drive. I do have a lot of free time in the winter. I am just going to line up a set of wheels from a buddy down there for use on the dyno. Maybe you can find someone local to do that with too.

Oh yeah! Td I didnt even think of that...im on wrx 16" wheels and my overall tire circumference has increased....ive been getting 18-19mpg but didnt think to calculate a correction for the speedo being off...!

Yes that is the corrected mpg. My tires are stock diameter but the trans causes my speedo to read about 15% higher than actual speed. I always multiply my mpg number by 0.85 to get the real number.

Ah, right -- So, to figure this out here, I've got a 4.111 final ratio now instead of the stock 3.90 that the speedo was designed for.

And, stock tires (currently found on my stock '92 SS) are P185/65R15 - a diameter of ( ((185*0.65)*2)/25.4 ) + 15 = 24.4685 inches.
My current tires are P205/55R16 - a diameter of ( ((205*0.55)*2)/25.4 ) + 16 = 24.8780 inches.

According to http://www.4ws.com/speedometer-calculator-new-tires (also http://www.pepboys.com/tires/treadsmart ... _diameter/ for the reference formula), my correction factor is: -3.5%! Oh snap. Ends up I'm going slower than my speedo reads. So, fail -- I'm getting worse mileage than I'm calculating in the anrdoid Mileage app. LOL

Using the information provided, you are traveling -3.5% slower than your speedometer is reading!

Chris, if I'm not mistaken, with the 205/55 16 tires, you are actually going faster than what your speedometer reads.
