Did you have to replace the strut tops with sti or regular impreza ones in order to use there springs and struts?

To use the struts you dont. The springs are a different size in the rear if you have an older US legacy (tapered springs).

The strut tops remained the same, I didn't use anything different. The front almost seemed narrower than the spring but, when I actually put them on it was just the top rubber spring guard that looked a little too big.
I will however be upgrading the strut tops when I buy the other suspension items.
